Because it is done. This karma is like a painter, one can transform into many forms, and the follower is like the shadow of the body. What one does is not transferred to others, and what others do is not transferred to oneself, just like the happiness and suffering of different bodies. The power of virtue and evil is so strong that it throws people into heaven and hell, just like a king with great power. Vastness is like the expanse of the sky, and the variety is like the goods in the market. They do not mix with each other like the patterns of brocade. The essence of black and white does not change, like the উৎপལ་ (Tibetan, Sanskrit Devanagari, utpala, Chinese: উৎপལ་ flower) and कुमुत (Tibetan, Sanskrit Devanagari, kumuta, Chinese: water lily). Because whatever is accumulated will produce corresponding results, I should realize that everything is karma, and strive to take and abandon. Thinking like this, I will practice through the complete three aspects of preliminary, main practice, and subsequent practice. Forty-sixth Step of Guidance. The fifth point is to advise relying on a virtuous friend. Among the two, the nature of thinking and yoga practice, the first is thinking, which is divided into three types: differential thinking, nature observation, and praise of virtues. Among them, distinguishing between the holy and the unholy, and making choices: If you rely on a truly virtuous friend, then his virtues, goodness, and beauty will naturally influence you, just like sitting next to a sandalwood tree, you will naturally be infected with the subtle sandalwood fragrance. Therefore, one should rely on virtuous friends and virtuous companions, in order to make one's own virtues grow and expand more and more. If you rely on an evil, unwholesome friend and a sinful friend, then his faults will naturally influence you, just like kuśa (Tibetan, Sanskrit Devanagari, kuśa, Chinese: auspicious grass) soaked in unclean things, contaminated by the smell of rotten fish. Therefore, I must abandon evil, unwholesome friends and sinful friends, because I must reduce and abandon unwholesome aspects and make them disappear. Thinking like this, I will practice through the three aspects of preliminary, main practice, and subsequent practice. Forty-seventh Step of Guidance. Next is the observation of nature, which is divided into two types. The common nature is: just as going to the treasure island requires relying on a captain who is proficient in navigation, my going to the island of liberation and attaining Buddhahood also depends on the guru, the virtuous friend. Therefore, the guru's body, speech, and mind actions are without faults, and are adorned with perfect virtues, possessing extensive learning and compassion, and possessing immeasurable abilities.

Possessing loving-kindness and wisdom, connecting (beings) and placing them on the path to liberation, one should rely on (a guru) who can endure sorrow, fatigue, and hardship. May we quickly meet such a virtuous friend and be embraced by their compassion. May we never be separated (from the guru). Thinking in this way, practice with the completeness of the preliminary, main, and concluding practices. Guiding Steps Forty-eighth. Then, the uncommon characteristic is: Just as having wealth and power fully in this life, giving, the wheel-turning king, and so on, depend on a virtuous king, so too, obtaining the unsurpassed fruit and qualities of one lifetime depends on the guru Vajradhara, the holy one who is wise and accomplished. Therefore, one must rely on a holy guru who is complete with empowerment and vows, skilled in the points of tantra and oral instructions, has obtained the power of profound approach and accomplishment, possesses the stability of view, realization, and samadhi, and whose activity for the benefit of others is complete. May those who have not met such holy gurus meet them. May those who have met them never be separated. May we always please them and be embraced by their compassion, thinking in this way, practice with the three practices of preliminary, main, and concluding practices. Guiding Steps Forty-ninth. Then, there are three stages of praising qualities, the first stage being: Just as it is difficult for a udumbara flower to appear in the world, it is rare for a Buddha to appear. The virtuous friend who emanates from their compassion is also rare. Now, represented by our protector, the venerable guru, the true virtuous friends possess immeasurable rays of virtue, like a great and sturdy ship to cross the ocean of samsara, like a skilled captain to guide the path of liberation, like a wish-fulfilling jewel to dispel the decline of samsara and nirvana, like a stream of nectar to extinguish the flames of affliction, like a good rain cloud to pour down great Dharma rain, like the sound of a deva's drum to bring joy to all beings, like the king of medicine to cure all diseases of the three poisons, like the sun and moon lamps to dispel the darkness of ignorance, like a wish-fulfilling tree to fulfill desires, like the mandala of the sun possessing a thousand rays of activity, possessing such qualities is truly amazing! Now, I am happy to have met and rely on such a being.
