From the Sutra of Holding the Vows: If the mind is placed on the suchness of reality as it is, then an experience beyond words will arise. Therefore, it is called samadhi. Finally, when the mind, which is fickle and unruly like a monkey, never staying still even for a moment, is moistened with calm abiding that holds it one-pointedly and cultivated, then, as an antidote to that, by cultivating insight meditation that individually discerns that all phenomena are empty of inherent existence and that all appearances are like illusions, one realizes the meaning of unborn. Maitreya asked: Having accomplished calm abiding, one should train in insight. Thus it is said. For those of middling faculties, there are three aspects: the way of meditating, the method of abiding, and the way of progressing on the path. Among the ways of meditating, there are five, of which the instruction is to abide without conceptual thought: Thus, in accordance with the faculties, there are also three stages of the way of meditating. First of all, now the meditation for those of middling faculties is shown. Just as when water is turbulent with waves, a clear reflection does not appear and it wavers, so too, when the mind is unruly, filled with discursive thoughts, scattered and wavering, always clinging to various elaborations, then the wisdom of the mind's own clear and luminous nature, and the stars of clairvoyance and direct perception do not appear. Therefore, it is precious to remain still and unwavering in equanimity. Just as when the water's waves are turbulent, even if the condition for reflecting an image arises, the image is not reflected, so too, although the mind inherently possesses qualities such as clairvoyance, because it is preoccupied with the waves of discursive thought, the qualities do not appear. Therefore, it is precious to remain still in equanimity. The Doha says: This is the mind gathered upon the waves of wind, wavering and scattered, and becoming extremely unruly. If one realizes the nature that is born together, then one's own being will become stable. Thus it is said. How to abide? When the turbulent waves of discursive thought are gone, the mind's own light is like a lamp, naturally clear, so let the water of the mind not waver. It also says: The supreme lord without waves, meditation without turbidity arises. Water and lamp, abide alone, self-illuminating. Coming and going, I neither take nor abandon. Thus it is said. Showing the essential points of the body and the method of abiding, the way of remaining in equanimity is extensively shown, that is, abiding in the nature of being free from the three extremes and unwavering. It also says: The body is like the king of mountains with the seven dharmas,

Like a star in a child's eye, the nature of mind is like the empty, clear, and pure sky. Place the union of calm abiding and insight in the state of non-duality, free from elaboration. The body remains still in seven aspects: legs crossed in the lotus position, hands in meditative equipoise, spine straight, tongue touching the palate, breath gentle, eyes gazing at the tip of the nose, and neck slightly bent. The sense faculties remain still, meaning the eyes do not blink, and the ears, nose, tongue, body, and mind are not blocked. Whatever arises—forms, sounds, smells, tastes, tactile sensations, and thoughts—do not close their doors, nor follow after them. If you close the doors, you will not attain the five eyes, such as the divine eye, and the six types of clairvoyance of the mind, which are the qualities of keeping the sense faculties clear. If you follow after them, thoughts will be continuous, and there will be no difference from ordinary people. Therefore, the sense faculties are like the still water of a pond, where the reflections of the objects of appearance, like the images of stars, appear without interruption, remaining in equanimity. That is, if you do not grasp onto each object with thought, it will not cause harm, and on top of that, it will appear as its own quality. Appearing but not clinging is called non-conceptual wisdom. If there is no appearance, there is no wisdom of that object. Because there is no examination of conceptual and non-conceptual, there will also be no non-conceptual wisdom. Therefore, when the sense faculties perceive objects, by placing them in a state of non-conceptualization, the master of one's own awareness will directly realize that the coming and going of thoughts ceases, just like the breath stops. Even if the breath flows through the mouth and nose, thoughts do not move, and because elaboration ceases, it is labeled as the death of thought. When there is no elaboration, there is no need to meditate on the antidote, the antidote to elaboration is the yoga of non-elaboration, so what is the use of wisdom? It is not needed. The Doha says: The eyes do not close, and the mind does not block, the stopping of the breath is realized by the glorious guru. When the breath flows, the mind does not move, what does the yogini do at the time of death? So it is said. When the key point is reached, it is called the six aggregates being relaxed or uncorrected, because the object appears to the sense faculties, so the sense consciousness does not cling to the object. The sense faculties fall into the object, although clear, it does not harm the view of the clear light of samadhi, but rather becomes a support, so it is called expansion. As it says in that very text: As long as the sense faculties fall into the city of objects, then self-
