Also, it is said that the fallen gods and humans, their intention is the Dharmata Buddha. Thus it is. The instruction that those of medium and lower faculties should practice is: Those with power, those of medium and lower faculties should diligently practice, until the self-grasping has not disappeared into the Dharmadhatu, at that time they should practice with various means. Thus, those of medium and lower faculties should practice with great diligence, because they have not been liberated from the cause of samsara, self-grasping. The boundary between practicing and not practicing also lies in whether the grasping and the grasped of the mind disappear into the Dharmadhatu or not. In the All-Creating [King] it says: The wisdom of purity, two and non-two, is named practice and non-practice. Thus it is. Showing the rationality of practice is: The rationality of practice also lies in the fact that when self-arising and self-liberation have not been achieved, it is an ordinary self-nature of conceptual thought. In particular, bad conceptual thoughts will lead to existence. In order to liberate from it, the means of meditation is taught. Afterwards, boundless wisdom, vast space appears. That is also the fall into samsara by conceptual thought, as it says in the praise of Manjushri by Elephant Protector: Conceptual thought is great ignorance, it is the cause of falling into the ocean of samsara. Because of being separated from that conceptual thought, you are always in Nirvana. Also, as it says in the Jewel Heap Sutra: With the noise of conceptual thought, wandering in the quiet place of existence, constantly creating कर्म (karma, karma), क्लेश (kleśa, affliction), action, manifesting hundreds and thousands of sufferings. Thus it is. In order to pacify them, after practicing, it is certain that the wisdom of liberating all dharmas will appear in the future. Showing the necessity of uniting Shamatha and Vipassana is: That is also the one-pointed, with Shamatha one can suppress the head of affliction, with Vipassana one can dig out the root of affliction. As it is said, in the Cloud of Jewels Sutra it says: With Shamatha one can suppress affliction, with Vipassana one can completely purify affliction. Also, in the Bodhicharyavatara it says: Vipassana with perfect Shamatha, knowing that it can destroy all afflictions, therefore one should first seek Shamatha, which is easily accomplished in not being attached to the world. Thus it is. That also has one essence and, two separate ones. The former, from the part of abiding is Shamatha, from the part of clarity is Vipassana, with the union of Shamatha and Vipassana that realizes clarity and emptiness without extremes, one can be liberated from existence.

D. From the "Letter to a Friend": If there is no wisdom, there is no meditative concentration; without meditative concentration, there is also no wisdom. Whoever possesses these two, one should understand existence as like searching for footprints in the ocean. So it is said. Differences are twofold: those that accord with words and those that accord with meaning. The former is that focusing the mind one-pointedly on the meaning of what is heard is shamatha (calm abiding), and understanding the meaning from that is vipashyana (insight). The latter is that through meditation, initially just achieving one-pointedness is shamatha, and later realizing that it is also without inherent existence is vipashyana. As the "Cloud of Jewels Sutra" says: Shamatha is one-pointedness of mind. Vipashyana is correctly and individually examining the Dharma as it is. Also, the "Explication of the Thought Sutra" says: Shamatha and vipashyana are two, those arising from wisdom and those arising from instruction. Those arising from wisdom are: contemplating the words of the twelve categories of scripture is shamatha, and understanding their meaning is vipashyana. Those arising from instruction are: making the mind unmoving through instructions is shamatha, and understanding its meaning is vipashyana. So it is said. Explaining the reason for this is: The reason is, therefore, the superior faculties transform bad thoughts into the Dharmakaya, and if there is no good or bad, there is no need to practice antidotes. The middling faculties cultivate the union of clarity and emptiness, so that good and bad thoughts dissolve into the Dharmadhatu, and a realization of union like the sky arises. The inferior faculties initially seek shamatha, so it is easy to gain stability on the object of focus. Then, by practicing vipashyana, individually examining, the outer and inner appearances and mind arise as great liberation. Therefore, it is important to know the order of the faculties. Thus, when a person of superior faculties goes to the Golden Island, it is like not finding earth and stones by searching, and whatever arises is liberated into the nature of reality, so the antidote is purified in the Dharmadhatu, and there is no need to meditate in meditation sessions. As the "All-Creating King" says: In the intention of the Buddhas, which is uncreated as it is, whatever thoughts of mind and mental factors arise, knowing that they abide in that very unborn nature, one is separated from all concepts of fabrication and searching for signs. So it is said. The middling faculties, by realizing the view, like the flame born of fire, the clarity free from sinking and excitement, like a pond free from turbidity, remain unmoving, shamatha and vipashyana are united, and conceptual thoughts dissolve into the Dharmadhatu, and a realization like the sky arises.
