It is the essence and main part of tranquility. To stabilize it, holding the mind on one object, it abides in a state of slightly non-conceptual revolving. In reality, the nature of this mind, from wherever it comes, does not go, does not stay, a plain and ordinary self-nature always exists. From the part of clarity and transparency comes insight (vipassanā). From the part of abiding comes tranquility (śamatha). Because of being non-dual, it is said to be union. Existence is always present in all sentient beings, and clarity is easy to recognize in times of natural stillness, rest, and so on. Yogis are liberated by knowing the tranquility and insight of their own unaltered states, whether scattered or abiding. How to hold the object of focus: The method of holding the mind on one object of focus. This has two aspects: with appearance and without appearance. Two: outer and inner, thus encompassing four. With appearance are the objects of the five senses, such as forms. Without appearance, one rests the mind in a non-conceptual, one-pointed state. Outer objects include stones, trees, statues, and so on. Inner objects include lotuses and stamens in the heart center. First, the method of holding the mind with appearance is: Focusing the mind without distraction on any of the forms, sounds, smells, tastes, or textures, thereby abiding in a one-pointed state. Once that is stable, holding the mind without appearance is to hold the mind in a state of non-conceptualization. In reality, meditating on deities' forms, letters, lotuses and stamens in the heart center, emblems such as wheels, or lights, etc., within the body, gives rise to tranquility that is more peaceful with a greater element of bliss, which pacifies elaboration. Even if one holds onto an external support such as a stone, tree, or statue without distraction, it gives rise to tranquility that is clear and transparent. In reality, because there is more elaboration, holding outwards leads to scattering, so hold inwards. Because there is less conceptualization, holding inwards leads to more sinking, so hold outwards. In reality, first, by holding the mind on any object with characteristics, then the characteristic-less will naturally arise. Those who do not know, if they hold the mind on objects such as statues, will go into elaboration, saying that they are resting in a state of nothingness, without elaboration. This is speech that does not understand the key point and lacks experience. Like this, it does not matter what you direct your mind to. When directing, first a thought precedes it, but then that object appears, but the mind does not engage in grasping onto it, and the mind is in a state of clarity without scattering or gathering.
