Furthermore, it is said that if one thoroughly examines the thousandfold world system, there is nothing that becomes as much of an enemy as one's own wife. In short, one should first examine which affliction is strongest in one's own mindstream and primarily abandon it. One must abandon all attachment to the objects of the six senses. As it is said in the Letter to a Friend: "Those who are constantly unwavering and unmoving towards the objects of the six senses, and who conquer enemies and the like on the battlefield, are considered by the wise to be the foremost heroes." Furthermore, it says in the same text: "Gambling, watching gatherings, laziness, relying on sinful friends, drinking alcohol, wandering at night, which leads to bad migrations, abandon these six things that cause fame to decline." Furthermore, holding one's own doctrine as supreme and disparaging others, having doubts about the profound Dharma, clinging to impermanence as permanence, clinging to untruth as truth, clinging to what is inverted as supreme, clinging to the suffering of samsara as happiness—in short, together with the four inversions, these are the bonds of all existence, so they should be primarily abandoned. As it says therein: "Holding vows and asceticism as supreme, the four inverted views of self, and doubt—know that these three are the keys that close the gates of the city of liberation." In particular, being happy when gaining and unhappy when not gaining, being happy when comfortable and unhappy when suffering, being happy when gaining fame and unhappy when faced with slander and infamy, being happy when praised and unhappy when criticized—these eight worldly dharmas must be abandoned. As it says therein: "The wise ones of the world say that gaining and not gaining, comfort and discomfort, fame and infamy, praise and blame—may you treat these eight worldly dharmas with equanimity and not disturb my mind." Furthermore, to accomplish the seven riches, as it says therein: "Faith, discipline, learning, and generosity, stainless shame, knowing shame, and wisdom—the Buddha spoke of these as the seven riches." Encouraging householders and others to engage in virtue and establishing them in the observance of purification, as it says therein: "Abandon harming, stealing, sexual misconduct, lying, drinking alcohol, eating at improper times, delighting in high beds and seats, songs, dances, and various garlands, and uphold the discipline of an Arhat.

O follower of the earth! If you possess these eight branches, you will bestow the delights of fasting, enjoyment, heavenly bodies, and wish-fulfillment upon men and women. Thus it is said. In short, the meditator dwells in the monastery, restraining his mind from all wrongdoing through the discipline of moral conduct. Through the discipline of accumulating virtuous dharmas, he cultivates unprecedented samadhi and liberation, and enhances those already attained, passing the days and nights solely with virtuous practices. Through the discipline of benefiting sentient beings, he encourages those who come there to engage in virtue, satisfying those who desire the Dharma and those who have violated the precepts with the Dharma that is appropriate to each. Even towards birds, wild animals, insects, ants, and other sentient beings, he does not harm them, but gives them food and other things, and recites the names of the Tathagatas. He proclaims the sound of the Three Jewels. He thinks, "Someday these will surely become Buddhas," and "Someday I will liberate these from samsara." He thinks that these may also be emanations, and thus generates reverence, practicing faith and pure perception. He contemplates separation and impermanence, thinking of how things exist now but vanish in an instant. He does not spend even a moment in vain, but passes the time with pure virtuous thoughts. How to cultivate the limb of means: there are two aspects, the actual method of cultivating shamatha and vipashyana, and the separate explanations. There are also three aspects to the method of cultivating shamatha and vipashyana: teaching what to abandon and what to cultivate. Secondly, how to protect the limb of means: Sleepiness, drowsiness, excitement, regret, and doubt are the five obscurations. Having abandoned them, cultivate the union of shamatha and vipashyana. Sleepiness and drowsiness greatly obscure shamatha. Excitement and regret distract vipashyana. Doubt is an opposing factor that harms both. Here, there are five obscurations to meditation for practitioners of yoga: sleepiness and drowsiness cause the clarity and vividness of true shamatha to sink, while excitement and regret distract the clarity and one-pointedness of vipashyana. Doubt is the cause of non-achievement in both cases. Sleep is the involuntary drawing in of the mind. Drowsiness is the non-virtuous consciousness that does not clearly perceive the object. Excitement

Distraction is the mind wandering due to external objects. Regret is the unpleasant feeling arising from dwelling on certain matters. Doubt is the inability to decide due to a dualistic mind, thus hindering accomplishment. These must be abandoned. The Letter to a Friend states: "Excitement and regret, malice and drowsiness, sleep and craving, and doubt, these five obscurations are thieves of virtue, know this." That is, excitement and regret are one, sleep and drowsiness are one, craving, malice, and doubt, making five in total. The method for removing obstacles is: sleep, drowsiness, and so on, these five can be summarized into sinking and excitement. When sinking, one should brighten the mind; when excited, one should meditate single-pointedly. Among these, sleep and drowsiness are sinking, so one should meditate on the eleven ways of focusing the mind to brighten it. The others are excitement, so one should strive to meditate on the nine ways of abiding the mind. The method for practicing the union of antidotes is: insight without calm abiding increases excitement; calm abiding without insight is indeterminate. Union is the antidote to obscurations, the supreme path. Wisdom not moistened by calm abiding is merely verbal understanding. Calm abiding not grasped by insight cannot transcend the indeterminate seed of samsara, therefore one should strive to practice union. The Letter to a Friend states: "Without wisdom, meditation is not virtue; without meditation, there is no wisdom. Whoever possesses both, should seek existence like footprints in the dark sea." Thus it is said. Explaining separately the two, calm abiding and insight. The four causes for the accomplishment of calm abiding are: first, calm abiding is accomplished through the relaxation of body, speech, mind, and heart. All phenomena are the nature of equality, contemplating extreme stillness is the main branch. The mind focuses on one object, like a circling. Thus, non-conceptual samadhi is accomplished through the extreme relaxation of the three doors. When the body relaxes, the pulse slows; when the pulse slows, the breath slows; when the breath slows, the elements relax, and the petals of the four chakras and so on abide in their respective places. The calm abiding of the mind abiding naturally accomplishes, because the support of the mind, the clear element, does not waver, abiding in one place. Thus, when meditating slowly, the nature of the mind without scattering or gathering...
