Tormented by the suffering of longing, may those who are separated from the path of liberation without eyes attain the non-abiding Nirvana. Although this precious human body with leisure and endowment is obtained, since it is impermanent and without essence, and is abandoned, may all non-virtuous sins be completely abandoned, and may the complete and perfect Buddhahood be attained. From the Great Perfection, Resting the Mind in its Natural State, the chapter on the union of calm abiding and insight, the undefiled meditation of the path, the eleventh chapter, commentary. Having practiced in this way, connecting the ultimate result with the cause. The twelfth chapter, the chapter on exerting effort, has three general meanings: advising to learn the cause of accomplishing meditation, showing the three unwavering samadhis, and dedicating the merit of the occasion. The first general meaning is advising to learn the cause of accomplishing meditation: Having explained the very profound way of practicing the path in this way, now I will speak of the nature of its limbs, which are certain to be accomplished. That is, the way that has just been explained, in this way, the cause of accomplishing the union of meditation, one should learn the three limbs of unwavering samadhi. When the essence of the path to be accomplished is the special meditation, it will also be accomplished by the combination of the three limbs. The second general meaning is showing the three unwavering samadhis, which has two parts: a brief explanation and a detailed explanation. The brief explanation is: What are those three limbs? Like this: By whom it is accomplished is the limb of ritual, how it is accomplished is the limb of means, and non-dually it is accomplished is the limb of essence. In this way, all accomplishment of true samadhi will be accomplished by three methods: by whom the person accomplishes it, by what means it is accomplished, and what essence is accomplished. The detailed explanation has three parts: by whom it is accomplished is the limb of ritual, how it is accomplished is the limb of means, and non-dually it is accomplished is the limb of essence. Among them, by whom it is accomplished, the limb of ritual has five, among which it is accomplished by one with renunciation: First, the person by whom it is accomplished, the individual, is one with renunciation. The body is kept far away from the city of busyness, and the mind is kept far away from the collection of elaborations. By that, this samadhi is quickly accomplished. In this way, the body and speech are distracted by busyness, and the mind is distracted by a thousand nets of elaboration.

Because even the mere practice of calm abiding cannot be accomplished, what need is there to mention genuine samadhi? Therefore, one should distance the body from the bustling city, head to a monastery, and dwell alone in an extremely secluded forest or place. One should distance the mind from the turmoil of discursive thoughts, and with the moisture of calm abiding, one can accomplish profound samadhi. The King of Samadhi Sutra says: "Young man, therefore, those who desire samadhi should abandon bustling and distracting places and strive to dwell alone in a peaceful forest." Moreover, it cannot be accomplished by dwelling at home. The same sutra says: "Those who dwell in the home, seeking to attain perfect and pure enlightenment, such Buddhas have never appeared in the past, do not exist now, and will not exist in the future." It can be accomplished through upholding the precepts and extensive learning. Furthermore: "Those who are faithful, know shame and have a sense of honor, are mindful, pure in discipline, delight in virtue, are learned, have few desires, and are content, will quickly accomplish this samadhi." It can be accomplished through having faith, because one enters with faith in the Dharma, and after entering, faith increases even more. As the Jewel Heap Sutra says: "For those who have faith, pure virtues arise naturally." Knowing shame and having a sense of honor means being interested in practicing samadhi and not abandoning it, thus becoming a yogi. Being mindful means protecting the mind from distractions, so samadhi can be accomplished. The Noble Samadhi Sutra says: "Through mindfulness, knowing shame, and having a sense of honor, one will attain profound and noble samadhi." It can be accomplished through discipline. The previous sutra says: "On the head of those who possess discipline dwells this peaceful and supreme samadhi." Delighting in virtue, being learned, having few desires, and being content also enable the accomplishment of samadhi. The Moon Lamp Sutra says: "Possessing a collection of qualities, delighting in virtue, being content and having few desires, being learned, reducing possessions, dwelling in a secluded place, and delighting in solitude, it is not difficult to attain this supreme samadhi." It can be accomplished by abandoning the five obscurations. Furthermore: "Subduing body and mind, delighting in dwelling in solitude, abandoning sleep, laziness, and delighting in talk, being without agitation and regret, and reducing association with others.
