The actual [method] is: the means. By placing it in this way, the mind becomes workable. It does not scatter elsewhere, but seizes the object to which it is directed. The longer it is placed, the more it remains in equilibrium. When body, speech, and mind are pervaded by joy and happiness, then single-pointed, unwavering shamatha is accomplished. When the mind is held on whatever object, and as long as samadhi is not abandoned, thoughts do not scatter. When the mind is at ease, the body is at ease, speech is minimal, words are gentle, and the complexion is radiant, it is the time when single-pointed shamatha is accomplished. As it says in the sutra: "A bhikshu practicing yoga, my body and mind are workable. The perception of food is small. Speech is minimal and words are gentle. The color of the skin is also extremely radiant," and so forth. There are also two aspects to vipashyana. The way to train is: shamatha is workable. Then, training in the meaning of vipashyana is: all these phenomena of samsara and nirvana that appear externally, with various appearances, are like dreams and illusions. Like reflections, emanations, echoes, cities of gandharvas, like cataracts and mirages, they are without essence. Empty in appearance, in the state of emptiness of self-nature, like something that has never existed from the beginning, one should meditate on the eight similes of illusion. As it says in the Noble Samadhiraja Sutra: "These dharmas are like bubbles and plantain trees. Like illusions, like lightning in the sky. Like the moon in water, and like mirages." And: "Just as a city of gandharvas, a mirage, like an illusion, like a dream, all dharmas should be known in the same way. Meditating on characteristics, empty of essence." And in the Akashagarbha Sutra: "With one dharma, all dharmas are like illusions. Like mirages, ungraspable and uncollectible. False and not lasting, having realized this, one will soon go to the heart of bodhi." Thus, all the impure containers and contents that appear in the face of delusion, and all the appearances of the pure deities, are not established in reality like dreams. In the face of delusion, they appear due to the power of habits or accumulation. All that arises in that appearance, although it seems pure, is false because it appears in the face of dualistic appearance. As it says in the sutra: "Even nirvana is like a dream, like an illusion." Thus it is said. The false Buddha that appears in the face of delusion is the nature of an emanation, like the moon in water.

. Appearances are false, while the Dharmakaya and Sambhogakaya of the expanse remain unmoved. The pure Buddha's nature does not reside in Akanishta; this falsehood is not true. Moreover, through deluded thoughts, samsara and its joys and sorrows are transmitted from one to another, and it seems as if they can be counted by sensation. However, from that very moment, if we look at the nature of mind as unborn, samsara and non-samsara are like a dream, and when delusion arises from the sleep of habit, it is said that there has never been a deluded appearance. As it is said in the Sutra Requested by the Noble Upali: I have shown the terrors of the hell of the mind, and even though I have made many thousands of sentient beings weary, those beings who die and go to the lower realms, those beings have never existed. Those who come with swords, great arrows, and weapons, there is no harm being done either, and when they see it falling on the body, there are no weapons there. Various pleasing flowers are blooming, and the golden palace is burning, delightful to the mind. Here, there is no action for them either; those are established by the power of thought. By the power of thought, the world is falsely imputed, and children are distinguished by clinging to concepts. Grasping and not grasping, that also has not arisen; complete conceptualization is like illusion and mirage. In short, these phenomena of imputed appearances, like the eight similes of illusion, are non-existent but appear, and one should strive to meditate on them clearly and vaguely. The way to arise is: since even grasping at illusion is not found, one should meditate like space. Dharma: All things are like space and without self. Abiding equally in the unborn and free from elaboration. Therefore, there is no self in external phenomena, and one realizes that the object of grasping and the grasper have no self-nature. Moreover, there is no truth in appearance, and that is only imputed. In reality, one should abide equally in the state that is not the realm of elaboration of existence and non-existence by nature. Therefore, the conceptualization of grasping at external truth or untruth, illusion, will also be reversed. At that time, when the object of grasping is not found, one realizes that at that time, attachment to it, the thought of grasping at delusion, is not established, so incidentally, the grasper is also not established. One should realize and meditate on the nature of reality that is non-existent in any entity and transcends objects. As it is said in the Arya Samadhiraja Sutra: In countless eons of the past, I remember that a lord of men appeared, a great sage.
