The holder takes water from the ocean and sprinkles it all over the earth, yet it does not diminish, remaining equal to the sky, without increase or decrease. The perfectly complete Victorious Ones are fully filled, the very nature of being born together as one. From this, beings arise and cease, and within it, there is neither reality nor unreality. Thus it is said. Just as small streams merge into the ocean, all appearances of arising, etc., are one in unbornness. Just as one sun or one lamp dispels many darknesses, knowing one unbornness, all illusory appearances are known as unborn. Just as when rain falls from the clouds and covers the entire earth, the clouds do not increase or decrease in size, so too, from the nature of the unborn, phenomena appear as arising and ceasing, yet the nature of the unborn does not increase or decrease. Although all beings are deluded by clinging in the naturally pure state of mind, one should understand that the nature of mind is unwavering, for mind itself is inherently pure. And in the "Saṃdhinirmocana Sūtra," Subhūti asked: "Lord, in the past, when I resided in a solitary forest hermitage, there was a renunciate who expressed himself by focusing on various dharmas. Some focused on the aggregates, some on the elements, some on the sense bases, and some on dependent origination and the mindfulnesses. I, knowing the characteristic of one dharma as selflessness, understood that all dharmas are likewise." The third general topic is the teaching of what is to be purified. Thus, these phenomena that appear as if they exist, yet from the beginning are without inherent existence, especially the impure appearances of the six realms of existence, appearing as if they exist, are the forms of habitual illusory perceptions, like the appearance of hair falling to one with blurred vision. Wanting to eliminate this is like curing vitiligo. Wanting to purify illusory appearances, one must eliminate the cataract of ignorance. Just as when one's vision is obscured by vitiligo, causing the appearance of falling hair, one strives to eliminate the vitiligo, so too, beings, from beginningless time, are obscured by the habitual tendencies of clinging to self and what belongs to self, and by the cataract of ignorance. Therefore, although the luminous nature of mind, the essence of the Buddha, is inherently present, it is not seen.
