Now, a clear mirror surface can serve as a basis for the appearance of images, and because it has the ability to manifest or create forms on the face, when one's own face appears, the image of the face is neither the face itself, nor does it have the ability to create other forms from outside the face. Similarly, these appearances in various confusions, because they arise dependently on the confused causes and conditions, when they appear, the objects of appearance, such as mountains and so on, are not the mind either. Apart from the appearance arising from the confused imprints of the mind, there is no other truth established, so it is the appearance of illusion, like the appearance of falling hairs to someone with cataracts, appearing without any similarity. Furthermore, some say, if these appearances of earth, stones, and so on, are neither internal nor external, then what are they? One should say to you who cling to the mere existence established by dualistic grasping that you are a pig. Although that is so, all the phenomena of samsara and nirvana that appear, from the time of their appearance, are not established in any of the three—internal, external, or in between—and it is said that appearance is similar to the eight examples of illusion. As it says in the Noble Samadhiraja Sutra: 'As in a mirror or a vessel of oil, when a woman gazes at her face adorned, the mandala of her face appears completely, yet it is neither existent nor non-existent; likewise, know all phenomena.' And so on. Moreover, these appearances that seem to be non-existent give rise to the confused grasping of grasper and grasped. Here, the grasped is the thought that arises in the first moment from the object of grasping, that is, the mind itself is one that gives rise to grasping; the grasper is the subsequent arising of discrimination, that is, all the thoughts that arise from the mind. As it says in the Vow of Avalokiteshvara: 'The grasped is the mind that grasps the object, and the grasper is what arises from the mind that discriminates it.' If you want to know, know it like that. Here, some who are not wise, ignorant, and arrogant say: 'The grasped is the appearance of mountains and so on, and the grasper is one's own awareness.' Enough of your wrong thinking, you cowherd! Then, for the noble ones who have abandoned grasper and grasped, do these objects appear or not? If they appear, then grasper and grasped would appear, because you have acknowledged that the object is the grasped, and that awareness itself is the grasper, because it appears. If they do not appear,

Regarding explaining appearances as being like illusions, and the fact that Hearers and Arhats see mountains and monasteries, and that Buddhas know the realm of how many things appear, these knowledges do not possess splendor. Although there are many reasons and scriptures regarding these, there is no end to extremely inverted cognitions, so what should be done? As Dharmakīrti said: Because the path of wrong views has no end, these should not be elaborated here. As it is said. Considering appearances to be mind has already been refuted. However, taking mountains and so on as objects, the initial consciousness that grasps them is called appearance. It is true that appearances and the objects of appearance are not distinguished. However, the intelligence of those who act is wise, because they fabricate even inverted things and cling to them as true. The object of appearance is not mind either, because it exists even when oneself does not exist, and it does not change when oneself becomes other, and because it appears as colors and so on. If it were one's own mind, then it would definitely go and come with oneself, existing when oneself exists, and not existing when oneself does not exist. Just as the mind has no color or shape, so too should those objects change, as mentioned before. Regarding the certainty of appearing and not appearing, because it is mind, it is sufficient to establish mere appearance as mind. To mistake the object of appearance as mind is very foolish, and it is those who say that one should not be arrogant. Regarding showing the world of appearances as being like illusions: Thus, just as when an image appears in a mirror, in the mirror, the form appears but is not established, and there is no creation of other forms from the form. Just as appearing as two without being is directly perceived, one should understand all kinds of phenomena in the same way. Thus, although the form does not move into the mirror, it appears, just as from the time of appearance, it is not established as another phenomenon other than the form. All the phenomena of the world of appearances, when they appear to the mind, are neither established as mind nor as things other than mind, and should be understood through the eight similes of illusion. As it is said in the Root Wisdom: Like a dream, like an illusion, like a city of Gandharvas, so is birth, so is dwelling, so is also said to be destruction. And as it is said in the King of Samādhi Sutra: Just as the sky is clear and the moon rises, its image appears in the clear ocean, but the moon does not move into the water, all phenomena
