Even when used individually, one should know that their nature lacks true essence. As the "Amazing King Sutra" says: "Originally spontaneously accomplished Buddha Dharma, without beginning, end, or middle, in the nature like space, ignorant children wander. Yet without bondage or liberation, like the nature of illusion." And as the "Secret Essence Sutra" says: "By grasping at discrimination as self, one forcefully ties knots in the sky. Without bondage or liberation, the originally spontaneously perfect Buddha Dharma, manifests various displays to teach this." That is, being deluded by grasping at what is meaningless as self. As the "Noble Jewel Cloud Sutra" says: "These are without self, but the ignorant beings who cling to grasping at self manifestly cling to the aggregates of self as having a self, therefore they do not comprehend suchness. Because they do not comprehend, they wander in the cycle of existence like a wheel of fire." Thus, the way in which various deluded appearances arise from clinging to the habits of mind is also explained in the "Lotus Play Sutra": The son of the gods, Lotus Play, said to Manjushri: "Manjushri, are these external objects made by a maker, or how should we view them?" Manjushri said: "Son of the gods, these external objects are not made by a maker, but are appearances of the habits of mind or thought." The son of the gods said: "However much habits are strengthened, how can they appear as solid and dense like mountains, oceans, sun, and moon?" Manjushri said: "Son of the gods, they can appear. For example, in the great city of Varanasi (ancient Indian place name, now Benares), there was a Brahmin named Fire Offering who meditated on his body as a tiger. The people of the city saw him as a tiger and fled, causing the city to become empty. Furthermore, those who meditate on earth and water appear as earth and water. If a monastic practitioner of yoga meditates on impurity and the idea of bones, it appears as such. If that is the case, why would the strengthening of beginningless habits not appear?" The son of the gods said: "Due to the strengthening of habits, why do various forms appear?" Manjushri said: "All appearances are uncertain. What is appearance for some is darkness for others. Thus, only on earth

Moreover, for earth, there is also the perception of it as earth; for earth, there is also the perception of it as fire; for earth, there is also the perception of it as enjoyment; for earth, there is also the perception of it as suffering. For fire, there is also the perception of it as fire; for fire, there is also the perception of it as enjoyment; for fire, there is also the perception of it as a dwelling; for fire, there is also the perception of it as food. For water, there is also the perception of it as water; for water, there is also the perception of it as fire; for water, there is also the perception of it as earth; for water, there is also the perception of it as nectar; for water, there is also the perception of it as a dwelling. For space, there is also the perception of it as space; for space, there is also the perception of it as a dwelling; for space, there is also the perception of it as earth. Therefore, because there is no certainty, due to the power of habit, it appears in whatever way. In this way, because there is no certainty, it is without inherent existence, like a dream. Moreover, when looking at one person, they appear as many parts, such as appearing as relatives, enemies, monks, Brahmins, men, and so on, which is not contradictory. One should understand that phenomena appear in various ways, but in essence, they are without duality. As it is said in the Doha Treasury: Just as the water that is not moved by the wind, also changes into moving waves. Similarly, the appearance of a king shooting an arrow, although it is one, manifests in various forms. Just as by looking wrongly due to delusion, one lamp appears as two. Similarly, the seer and the seen are without duality, alas, the mind appears as two objects. That is, just as one water appears as many waves due to the wind, and one lamp appears as two due to rubbing the eyes, and one Saraha is seen as both good and bad, similarly, all phenomena are in reality without duality, but are deluded by grasping at duality, it is like that. Therefore, one should understand that all phenomena appear in non-existence, without duality, like a dream. Refutation of the assertion that appearances are mind Now it is said that although appearances appear in the mind, the object of appearance is not the mind. The reason is: In this way, all external objects that appear, although they appear in the mind, are not established as mind. And there is nothing that is established outside of the mind. Although the duality of grasper and grasped appears due to the power of habit, at the time of appearance, the grasper and grasped are without duality, like a face and its reflection in a mirror. In this way, the image of a face appears in a mirror.
