Hearing alone is the primary cause for the instability of aspirational bodhicitta. However, cultivating virtuous habits, awakening the potential of one's nature, and generating the root of compassion are the causes for the arising and stability of the engaged bodhicitta, which arises after the initial generation. These are what are being referred to. The essence of bodhicitta is the mind that wishes to attain perfect enlightenment for the sake of others, inseparable from both aspirational and engaged bodhicitta, and which has the nature of the six perfections. As stated in the Gandavyuha Sutra: "Bodhicitta is that which is undertaken for the sake of others, having the nature of aspiration and engagement, and endowed with the perfections." Furthermore, the two types of bodhicitta and the three types of discipline, although distinguished by their aspects, are of one essence. Aspiring and acting for the benefit of others constitute aspiration and engagement. As the learned master Jñānagarbha states in the Ornament of Realization: "Both bodhicittas do not deviate from the desire for perfect enlightenment for the sake of others." Moreover, guarding one's own stream through vows is the discipline of restraint; benefiting others through that is working for the welfare of sentient beings; and increasing the two accumulations and so forth is the discipline of accumulating virtuous dharmas. All of these are said to be the bodhisattva's vows, as they restrain the non-virtue in one's own stream, along with its contributing factors. For example, a single precious jewel can dispel disease, fulfill wishes, and eliminate darkness, and so forth. Although the essence is the same, the aspects of its function are different. "The individual natures are explained in detail as follows:" Now, explaining the nature of aspiration and engagement. Aspiration is considered to be the nature of the four immeasurables, while engagement is the six perfections. As stated in the Maitreya Pariprccha Sutra: "Maitreya, aspiring for the sake of others is also great love, great compassion, great joy, and great equanimity. Right practice is the six perfections." "Explaining the benefits of aspirational bodhicitta:" These two should also be understood from the perspective of their individual distinct benefits. For now, the benefits of aspirational bodhicitta are: Beings, whoever to the Buddhas who pervade all directions, for many hundreds of millions of eons offer service and veneration, themselves well

Merely seeking a little benefit, that merit cannot bring down the rain of aspirations. As it is said in the "Great Discourse on the Complete Nirvana of the Exalted One": "Whoever offers to all Buddhas, with seven jewels and bedding, and five kinds of food and immeasurable substances, until the end of life, is surpassed by the supreme aspiration for enlightenment for the sake of sentient beings for a single moment. There is no measure to that." Furthermore, it is said: "If a person cultivates the mind of enlightenment for a single moment, the accumulation of merit from that, even the Victorious Ones cannot enumerate." Explaining Similar Examples Presenting its validity: A mind that arises for a single moment, alleviating a small amount of suffering for beings, will liberate from the lower realms, and it is said to experience immeasurable bliss of gods and humans. The daughter of the boatman's friend gave four karshapanis, eight, sixteen, and thirty-two, and then kicked her mother's head. On an island in the ocean, four goddesses, eight, sixteen, and thirty-two welcomed her. When her virtuous deeds were exhausted, she entered a southern iron house. As the grinding wheel rotated above her head, she thought: "In Jambudvipa (Earth), there are many who kick their mother's heads, they will surely come here as well. If my action can be of use, may they not be born here." In the instant she thought this, the grinding wheel stopped rotating, she ended her life, and was born as a god in Tushita. When the Teacher was born in the hell realm, as Gyad Bag Shita was pulling the chariot of fire, Karma Rupa could not pull the chariot, Yama was angered and struck him with a hammer of fire, and compassion arose in him. Gyad Bag Shita began to pull the chariot, Yama threatened him with the hammer, saying, "Who can do anything about their respective karma?" In that instant, he was born in the Thirty-Three Heavens (Trayastrimsha), and so on, immeasurable benefits were proclaimed. Explaining the Benefits of Entering Obtaining great benefits from the aspiring mind: Therefore, the benefits of entering are limitless, because they are truly connected and completely pervasive. A single moment of connection, with a pervasive supreme mind, is said to perfect the two accumulations of many eons. Thus, initiated by a superior intention, in the instant of connection, there are immeasurable benefits and aspirations.
