In the Great Bodhicitta Sutra, Bodhisattva Light Protector asked: "World Honored One, how should one generate the mind?" The Buddha replied: "All phenomena are without characteristics like the sky, and are inherently clear and pure. This is called Bodhi. The arising of a precious mind that is in accordance with this, a mind that has not arisen before, is called generating the mind of Bodhi." Thus it is said. Depending on the three vows or three trainings, there are also three types of mind generation. In the Middle Length Mother Sutra, it says: "What is the mind that restrains faults, the mind that gathers virtuous dharmas, and the mind that matures sentient beings? One should diligently practice these three types of mind generation." Thus it is said. In the accumulation and preparation stages, there is practice through aspiration; from the first to the seventh bhumis, there is pure higher intention; in the three pure bhumis, there is maturation; and in the Buddha bhumi, there is mind generation that has abandoned obscurations. Thus, there are also four types. In the Ornament of the Sutras, it says: "Mind generation on the bhumis, aspiration and higher intention, purity, and maturation are said to be different, likewise, the abandonment of obscurations." Thus it is said. There are also five types of mind generation for the five paths of accumulation, preparation, seeing, meditation, and no more learning. In the Twenty Thousand Verses, it says: "The mind generation of the first practitioner, the mind generation of complete purification, the mind generation of seeing the Dharma, the mind generation of liberation, and the mind generation that is inconceivable. Subhuti, those who have not entered this should be made to enter, those who have entered should be completely purified, the divine eye should be generated, the truth of the noble path should be meditated upon, and the unobstructed Buddha eye should be attained." Thus it is said. Depending on the six perfections, there are also six types. In that same text, it says: "The vast and immeasurable mind that possesses the six perfections is not shared by all, including shravakas and pratyekabuddhas." Thus it is said. Depending on the ten perfections, there are also ten types. Good God said: "Thus, internally, through the samadhi of correct attention, one should meditate on the ten aspects of the mind of Bodhi." Thus it is said. If divided by the boundaries of the bhumis, there are twenty-two types, as shown by the examples in the Sutra Requested by Sagaramati. In the Ornament for Clear Realization, it says: "These are earth, gold, moon, fire,

Gold and a treasure-source sea, a vajra mountain, medicine, a spiritual friend, a wish-fulfilling jewel, the sun, a song, a king, a treasury, and a great path, a mount, a portion of adornment, and sounds, images, rivers, and clouds, are the twenty-two aspects. Thus it is said. The meanings of these examples are in order, as it says in its commentary: aspiration, thought, superior thought, application, generosity, discipline, patience, diligence, meditation, wisdom, skill in means, aspiration, strength, the perfection of wisdom, clairvoyance, merit and wisdom, qualities in harmony with the path to enlightenment, compassion and insight, retention and confidence, the joy of Dharma, the one vehicle, and possessing the Dharmakaya. The boundaries are: aspiration is like earth, thought is like gold, and superior thought is like a waxing moon. These three, in order, are the generation of bodhicitta on the small, medium, and great levels of the path of accumulation, and are named accordingly. Application is like fire, which is the generation of bodhicitta on the four paths of application. Generosity is like a treasure, discipline is like a source of jewels, patience is like an ocean, diligence is like a vajra, meditation is like a mountain, wisdom is like medicine, skill in means is like a spiritual friend, aspiration is like a wish-fulfilling jewel, strength is like the sun, and the perfection of wisdom is like a beautiful song. These correspond in order to the first through tenth bhumis. Clairvoyance is like a king, the two accumulations are like a treasury, qualities in harmony with the path to enlightenment are like a great path, compassion and insight are like a fine mount, and retention and confidence are like an adorned pool. These five are pervasive on the eighth, ninth, and tenth bhumis. The joy of Dharma is like sounds and images, the one vehicle is like a river, and possessing qualities equal to the Dharmakaya is like a cloud. These three exist on the tenth bhumi because they benefit sentient beings with wisdom and great activity. Thus, in the "Commentary Illuminating the Meaning," it says, "The first three are the first of the small, medium, and great levels.
