Thus, in an eon, one will dwell in hell, as stated by the capable one. Furthermore, in the Sutra of Miraculous Transformations, which is supremely peaceful and definitively determined: "Mañjuśrī, to the extent that a Bodhisattva has anger and contempt, for that many eons he will dwell in hell, therefore he should don armor." However, if one performs virtuous deeds with faith, merit will especially increase. In the previous sutra: "However, if one acts with great joy, the result of that will increase even more." Thus it is said. How does it increase? In the Sutra of the Mudra of Entering into the Definite and Indefinite: "Mañjuśrī, if one were to take permanence as an example, consider that all sentient beings in the ten directions of the universe have had their eyes gouged out. If someone were to restore their sight, or if all sentient beings in the ten directions of the universe were imprisoned in a dark and gloomy prison, and someone were to liberate them and place them in the bliss of a universal monarch or Brahma, then if any son or daughter of good family were to look upon and praise a Bodhisattva who is devoted to the Great Vehicle with a mind of faith, this would generate immeasurable merit compared to that." Thus it is said. Furthermore, even if one looks with a mind of affliction, one will not fall into the lower realms and will be born in the higher realms, so what need is there to mention looking with faith? In the Noble Heap of Jewels Sutra, a Bodhisattva named Delightful, who was handsome and pleasing to behold, was practicing begging for alms in Shravasti when he was seen by a merchant's daughter named Supreme Virtue. Those girls, tormented by the blazing fire of desire, died in this way and were born as gods in the Thirty-Three Heavens. There, that son of the gods remembered his previous life and thought, "Alas! Even looking at a Bodhisattva with a mind of desire results in such a ripening, so what need is there to mention offering and looking with faith?" Having thought thus, he came together with five hundred gods and made offerings with flowers and so forth. Thus it is said. Furthermore, even if one does not have faith in him and falls into the lower realms, in the end one will be saved by his compassion and will be liberated to the other shore of samsara. If one connects with faith, it is meaningful, so one will quickly attain enlightenment. In the Heap of Jewels Sutra: "If anyone commits sins against a Bodhisattva,

deeds done, after falling into evil destinies due to those deeds, again that Bodhisattva, with great effort, liberates them and places them in unsurpassed enlightenment, so it is said. The Bodhicaryāvatāra says: "Whatever beings, focusing on me, generate anger or faith, may that itself always become the cause for accomplishing all their purposes." So it is said. "Even if harm is done to someone, it is connected to happiness, I take refuge in that source of happiness." So it is said. 2. Explanation of the Essence, also in seven parts. Generally, the two, Aspiration and Application, are shown: Now, the essence of generating the mind [of enlightenment] will be explained. Thus, for the sake of limitless beings, in supreme enlightenment, the aspiration is to attain true Buddhahood, it is the nature of both aspiration and application. That also pervades with thought and aspiration, and with action. Like wanting to go and actually going. There, the mind of enlightenment is the desire for Buddhahood for the sake of others. The Abhisamayalankara says: "The mind of enlightenment is for the sake of others, the desire for true and complete enlightenment." So it is said. That also, the mind is the essence of the nature of things, and by examining the distinctions of that mental event, here, by generating the essence, the distinctions also arise incidentally, like the desire, the mind of enlightenment, etc., are obtained incidentally. Among the two essences, the aspiration mind of enlightenment is the desire to attain enlightenment, and the application is the practice of that Dharma, pervading with thought and aspiration, and with action, like wanting to go and actually going. The Bodhicaryāvatāra says: "The mind of enlightenment, in brief, should be known as having two aspects: the mind aspiring for enlightenment and the application to enlightenment itself. Just as one knows the difference between wanting to go and going, likewise, the wise should gradually understand the difference between these two." So it is said. Here, one should understand the various ways of distinguishing them. There are also two types of mind of enlightenment, conventional and ultimate. The Nirvana Sutra says: "By the distinction of conventional and ultimate truth, that mind of enlightenment has two aspects." So it is said. That also, the mind of enlightenment of ordinary beings and noble beings, or by focusing on external sentient beings and focusing on one's own internal mind, are called the conventional and ultimate mind of enlightenment, towards enlightenment.
