Karma and, the ten non-virtuous actions and, the three indeterminate ones are formations. Their virtuous actions lead to higher realms, non-virtuous actions lead to lower realms, and the indeterminate is a friend to both, being similar to non-virtuous actions. As stated in the Root Wisdom: 'Because of ignorance obscuring, there is rebirth again, the three formations arise from this, creating all sentient beings.' And so on. Whatever is done by the action of formations, it enters into any realm that is in accordance with its appearance, and generates its consciousness, which is consciousness. That very text says: 'Consciousness arises from the condition of formations, causing entry into all realms.' And so on. When consciousness enters its own realm, it enters into the part where the white and red bindus, wind, and mind are combined, from which feeling, perception, formation, and consciousness are the four aggregates of name, and form becomes the aggregate of form, combined they are called name and form. That very text says: 'When consciousness enters, name and form will arise.' And so on. Therefore, name and form arise from consciousness entering the mother's womb. That form is from the stage of being like curdled milk until the body is complete. At that time, the six sense sources of eye, ear, nose, tongue, body, and mind arise, therefore it is called the six sense sources. That very text says: 'When name and form have arisen, the six sense sources will also arise.' And so on. Then, contact arises from the combination of object, sense faculty, and attention, for example, just as eye contact arises from the combination of form, eye sense faculty, and eye consciousness. Similarly, contact arises in the mother's womb from the combination of name, form, and consciousness. That very text says: 'Relying on the six sense sources, true contact will also arise, relying on name and form and memory, there is only arising, thus relying on name and form, consciousness will also arise, name and form and consciousness, whatever is the combination of the three, that is contact, because of that contact.' And so on. Feeling arises from contact, from the three of agreeable, disagreeable, and neutral objects, the three of pleasant, painful, and neutral feelings arise. That very text says: 'All feelings will arise.'

From feeling arises craving for it, like feeling the sweetness of brown sugar, thus craving its deliciousness, which is pleasant feeling; from the feeling of suffering arises the desire to abandon it, thus craving happiness; from neutral feeling arises craving for equanimity, thus three kinds of craving arise. As it is said there: "Craving arises from feeling as a condition; craving occurs for the sake of feeling." From craving, whatever is desired will be taken as one's own. As it is said there: "If there is craving, there is grasping; the four aspects become grasping." What is that? The Clear Words says: "Thus, clinging and attachment to those feelings is the cause that arises from the condition of existence, namely, desire, discipline, views, asceticism, and the doctrine of self, these four will be completely grasped." Or, at the time of craving, there are four aspects: conformity, non-conformity, neutrality, and taking as one's own. From grasping arises existence; the five aggregates of form, feeling, perception, mental formations, and consciousness are existence, therefore its arising is also like that. As it is said there: "If there is grasping, the existence of the grasper will fully arise. If there is no grasping, there will be liberation, and existence will not arise. Existence is also the five aggregates." From that, birth and future rebirth initially arise. As it is said there: "From existence arises birth." After being born, there will be youth, old age, and death by the cessation of life. As it is said there: "Old age and death, and sorrow, lamentation with wailing, suffering, displeasure, and turmoil, these arise fully from birth." And, as it is said in the Sutra: "There, old age is complete maturity. Death is the destruction of the aggregate of old age. Sorrow is the heart's pain with manifest attachment due to universal ignorance of things going and dying. Lamentation with wailing is the verbal expression universally aroused by sorrow. Suffering is harm to the five faculties. Displeasure is the occurrence of the undesirable. Turmoil arises from many sufferings and displeasures." Thus, those dependent arisings are also called arising from a cause, in terms of the earlier ones giving rise to the later ones.
