If one needs to know what is necessary for these, the Treasury of Knowledge says: "For the sake of purity in the beginning, end, and middle, and for the sake of reversing ignorance." Thus it is said. These have explained the dependent origination of samsara. Now, there are two types of dependent origination of nirvana: the path and the fruit. The path is that the root of the twelve links of dependent origination that enter into the cycle of samsara is ignorance, so it is reversed by the wisdom of knowledge. By familiarizing the mind through the wisdom of hearing, contemplation, and meditation, the root of ignorance is reversed. When that is reversed, the others that depend on it are gradually reversed. Since the cause of entering into existence is exhausted, one transcends the state of samsara. As it says in the Letter to a Friend: "When birth ceases, all this ceases." And as it says in the Root Wisdom: "If ignorance ceases, then actions will not arise. Ignorance ceases when one meditates on that with wisdom. When those have ceased, those and those will not manifest. The mass of suffering alone, that is how it truly ceases." Thus it is said. That is also because yogis who desire liberation do not accumulate the karma that accomplishes samsara from the root, so its result will not arise in samsara later, because actions are prevented. As it says in that same text: "The root of samsara is action, therefore the wise do not act." Thus it is said. The dependent origination of the fruit is that the deeds of benefiting sentient beings from the Buddha onwards are like dreams and illusions, which will be explained in detail below. In this way, if one knows that all phenomena gather in dependent origination, then one truly understands the ultimate truth and attains nirvana. As it says in that same text: "Whoever sees dependent origination sees suffering, its origin, its cessation, and the path itself." Thus it is said. These are the second treasury of the great scriptures, because all phenomena gather there. These are the most precious among the things to be known. "The Teaching on the Unborn Appearance": Now, explaining the meaning determined by it, which is wisdom itself: This appearance is unborn from the beginning, like a reflection. Its essence is without substance, yet various appearances manifest. Having seen the dependent origination of pure nature, one does not abide.

Quickly attain the supreme state. Thus, all phenomena that appear as outer and inner dharmas are like the reflection of the moon in water, empty in essence but appearing in various forms. From the Samadhiraja Sutra: "Just as the moon in the water at night appears in a clear and unpolluted lake, the water moon is empty and accumulates but has no essence. Know all dharmas to be the same." Having understood that all samsaric and nirvanic dharmas are without inherent existence in this way, remain in equanimity. When the mind is placed without attachment or aversion to the external objects that appear in various forms and the internal awareness that arises in emptiness, then no other dharma is perceived, and the activity of the mind dissolves into the sphere of suchness, like the sky. This is called the ultimate meaning, the Perfection of Wisdom. As it says in the Bodhicharyavatara: "When neither real nor unreal abide before the mind, then, since there is no other alternative, one is utterly pacified in the absence of any object of focus." And as Saraha said: "Freed from the object of meditation and the meditator, meditation is named as not moving from its nature. The great seal is without mind, without expectation of any result." These meanings are also as stated in the Ornament of the Sutras: "It perfectly distinguishes all that is to be known, relies on samadhi, is completely liberated from all afflictions, wisdom is the well-spoken life force, and these three are complete. Having fully understood such wisdom, the wise ones truly practice." Its essence is the realization of what is to be known. The cause is relying on samadhi. The result is liberation from afflictions. The summary is: having fully understood the nature of dharmas through wisdom, one will be completely liberated from the three realms. The function is to purify life, speak well of the Dharma, and cut off doubts. As it says in that very text: "The supreme king of men turns the precious wheel, and to end suffering, he also teaches the Dharma to beings." The benefit is that wisdom leads one to the city of liberation. The divisions are the three of hearing, contemplation, and meditation, or the three wisdoms of the preliminary, actual, and subsequent stages of samadhi. The benefit of possessing these is, as it says in the Ornament of the Sutras: "The sons of the Buddhas fully understand all that is to be known,
