Due to fondness for the place, the source of qualities increases. By relying on solitary places, attachment to the five desires is completely abandoned. Therefore, because there is no commotion, the virtuous Dharma will not deteriorate. By traveling back and forth and asking questions, not speaking with words, emptiness, solitude, nearness to peace, solitude, are praised by all the Buddhas. Therefore, Bodhisattvas should always rely on hermitages and should not be attached to cities. Thus it is said. The Benefits of Relying on the Forest The aspect of perfect qualities, such forests are praised by the victorious ones. Due to weariness of worldly affairs, one turns to hermitages, and the merit of abandoning about seven steps, if one offers to as many Buddhas as there are sands in the Ganges for eons, the accumulation of merit from offering for eons, cannot match the former merit by a hundred thousand parts. Therefore, one should rely on the peaceful forest groves. Thus, some people offer to the Buddha with material things for an eon, but it is better to abandon seven steps with joy in solitary places such as forests with a mind of weariness, for the merit is greater. From the Noble King of Samadhi Sutra: If someone offers flowers, incense, food, and all the means of comfort to all the Buddhas for an eon, it is better to turn to the hermitage with a mind of extreme weariness and abandon about seven steps, for this accumulation of merit is immeasurable. Abandoning concern for body and life, emptiness and peace should be cultivated supremely, with diligence and a mind of great diligence, one should dwell in solitude like a deer. Thus it is said. Explanation of How to Meditate with Distinctions and Qualities Now, the way to meditate on Samadhi is explained: In the forest, there, sitting cross-legged on a cushion, one should remain unwavering and equanimous with a one-pointed mind. Discriminating the meaning of children's misdeeds, thus the Tathagata accomplishes the supreme meditation of virtue. The four meditations and the four formless meditations, the names of the three Samadhis of the noble ones who have not entered the path and those who have entered, should be known. By this, abandoning the mind of joy in desirable qualities, clear knowing and direct perception, Samadhi is manifestly accomplished. Eyes and miraculous powers transform freely in the mind, here the meditation

Its nature is to focus single-mindedly on any virtuous object. As it says in the Lamp for the Path: On whatever object, The mind should be placed on virtue. Thus. Also, when sitting on a cushion and remaining still without the mind wavering, the appearance of elaboration subsides, and it becomes one taste in the nature of reality, like closing the eyes. It is not that objects are not seen, but rather that there is an appearance of objects without grasping. Also, at that time, seeing the appearance of objects is like opening the eyes. These two are of one essence and exist simultaneously. As it is said: Like a person with eyes closed, So is the mind in equipoise. Like a person with eyes open, So is the wisdom attained afterwards. Thus. Also, the equipoise of one essence is calm abiding (shamatha), and the subsequent attainment is insight (vipashyana). These two, with one mind, one essence, one time, and one object, are also one in their function of dispelling obscurations. As it says in the commentary: The pure world is characterized by the absence of manifest clinging to the aspects of grasper and grasped. Because the subsequent mind gathers the self and the corresponding result, the reversal of perceptions such as form arises. Because objects appear without ceasing in the appearance of equipoise, it is purified by conceptual thought. Because the five ordinary objects, such as stones, appear, it is also called worldly. At that time, there is no aspect of grasper and grasped, because it is a non-conceptual mind. The mind of the appearing aspect at that time is gathered by the subsequent mind, which is named equipoise and subsequent attainment in appearance and emptiness, and is one with the mind of equipoise. Therefore, equipoise itself abandons grasper and grasped, and in accordance with the subsequent attainment, the subsequent attainment of one essence with it also abandons the perception of clinging to grasper and grasped in phenomena such as form and feeling. This is what is shown. The subsequent attainment that arises from equipoise is called distraction, which is clinging to grasper and grasped, and attachment. Also, the equipoise and subsequent attainment of one essence are present at all times during the practice of meditation. Distraction exists from the seventh ground onwards, and beyond that, there is one essence without separation. As it says in the Uttaratantra: To accomplish activities, the mind is always, Blazing like fire, And also in the absorption of peaceful contemplation, Always entering into equipoise.
