Filled with the buzzing sound of bees, beside the rocky mountains are naturally formed slate houses, content with just clear water and food adorned with leaves and flowers, feeling happy with birds and deer, residing together in that place of meditation is the fulfillment of a good wish in the heart from beginningless time. As it says in the "Guide to the Bodhisattva's Way of Life": "In the forest with deer and birds, the trees do not speak unpleasant words, it is very pleasant to be with them, when will I be able to live together?" "In a cave, an empty temple, or under a tree, when will I be able to live without looking back, without clinging to anything?" "When will I be able to live without attachment, freely moving at will, without clinging to anything?" And so on. Therefore, in that very bright and pleasing, small forest, happy and comfortable, a place of tranquility from all distractions, I shall live alone. So it is said. Away from disputes and afflictions, in the quiet forest, the fortunate one in the coolness of moonlight and sandalwood, the spacious slate house is pleasant, the silent and peaceful forest sways, thinking of benefiting others and walking. So it is said. In the "Letter to a Friend" it says: "Adorned with a full moon, the waist tied with dense clouds of heavy rain, without attachment to the mountaintop forest, like the wind, moving with limitless life. The forest is a place of refuge for deer, a place of all beauty and goodness, better than that pleasant forest, there may also be a slate dripping with water." So it is said. Explanation of how impermanence arises in solitude: In that place there is the fragrance of pine trees and various sandalwood, and the fragrance of incense and medicine, etc., arising from roots and flowers, is fragrant, solitary and pleasant, meditation naturally increases. All seasons are pleasant, like a lotus lake, summer, autumn, winter and spring, changing in sequence, increasing weariness of impermanence. Also like a lake full of large lotuses, filled with the fragrance of medicine and flowers, the breeze brings a comfortable fragrance.

Arise! Taking the example of the changing seasons, generate impermanence and intense renunciation in your mind; because you have no connection or intimacy with anyone, there is no attachment or aversion, and no need for clinging; even when dwelling, you do not rely on others and do not need to watch their faces; no matter where you work, you do not feel busy; whenever you leave, you do not develop attachment to others, nor are you detained by them, this happiness of having autonomy is difficult even for the lord of the gods, Indra, to obtain. As it is said in the "Bodhicharyavatara": In empty rooms, at the foot of trees, and in caves, Dwell wherever you wish, for as long as you wish, Abandon the suffering of guarding and protecting, Enjoy ease without dependence. Acting freely, without attachment, And having no connection with anyone, Contentment and happiness in this enjoyment, Even the king of gods finds it difficult to obtain. Thus it is said. As it is said in the "Letter to a Friend": How delightful is it in the forests, clear streams, pleasant banks, and secluded places? Are there heavenly maidens with fragrant perfumes, Adorned with necklaces and always with flowers, Whose beauty surpasses the appearance of the gods? With roots, fruits, bark, and leaves complete, Forests without reliance, mountain streams flowing coolly, A place of non-attachment, On the wide riverbank, adorned with fallen fruits and flowers, What is lacking in the delightful borderland, Where the hellish home deceives and dwells? In the wide mountain caves, there is no clamor, Utterly blissful, vast forests verdant, Adorned with garlands of trees, By the pleasant riverside, the sound of the stream like a drum, Proclaiming to guests that "This is not a place of affliction." All desires, enjoyments, and the three realms are said by the Victorious Ones to be like illusions, mirages, moon reflections in water, and waves. Thus it is said. "The reason why the mind becomes workable in that place is:" In that place, seeing the appearance of someone who has died, A charnel ground with scattered bones, One's own body is also of such a nature, Seeing it as having the nature of dispersing separately. In the conditioned, essence-less samsara, Abandon whatever wisdom is delighted in. Without strife, without affliction, always peaceful, One's own mind becomes workable and attains happiness. Generating renunciation towards samsara, and the pacification of strife and afflictions, etc., have immeasurable qualities. As it is said in the "Requested by Gangpo": Mountains and forests.
