Thinking of putting it off for a while and then letting it go is the laziness of sloth; thinking that someone like me can't do it, and being discouraged is the laziness of despising oneself. As it says in the "Guide to the Bodhisattva's Way of Life": "Clinging to bad laziness, and sloth despising oneself." Thus it is said. Showing that it has immeasurable qualities, the opposite of that, the qualities of diligence are: those who have diligence are praised by the world, those who have diligence can fulfill people's wishes, those who have diligence increase the accumulation of qualities, those who have diligence can dispel sorrow. If we summarize the immeasurable benefits of having diligence, they are: being praised by the people of the world, fulfilling wishes, increasing qualities, and attaining Buddhahood. As it says in that very text: "Thus, diligence is the basis of enlightenment, like a windless, unmoving place. Merit does not arise without diligence." Thus it is said. "Admonition to be diligent from the perspective of benefits": Diligence. That is, the excellent virtuous dharmas of the world, and what is the path that transcends the world, for the dharmas that have outflows and those that do not, in order to abandon the non-virtuous and accomplish the virtuous, one should truly abide with effort and diligence. Until Buddhahood is attained, there are even more superior qualities to be attained, so before that, one should not be lazy, but should generate diligence with effort. That is, before Buddhahood is attained, there is the possibility of attaining even more superior qualities, so one must generate diligence. That is, having joy in virtuous deeds. As it says in the "Guide to the Bodhisattva's Way of Life": "Diligence is joy in virtue." In terms of classification, there is the armor-like diligence that is the cause of accomplishing virtuous deeds and destroying the four maras, and the application diligence that is the cause of perfecting the five paths and ten bhumis; or, there is the diligence of benefiting sentient beings that is the cause of accomplishing the benefit of oneself and others; or, for the dharmas, the three diligences of effort with the body, diligence with speech, and exertion with the mind; or, as it says in the "Compendium of Topics": having joy in the mind for armor, application, not shrinking back, not turning back, and not being content; or as it says in the "Lankavatara Sutra": with what diligence does one exert oneself in the upper and lower parts of the night, and with a view that is in accordance with yoga, in order to dispel conceptual thoughts, that effort is the perfection of diligence.

As it is said. Those also, in the Ornament of the Sutras, it says: "With complete joy in virtue, Relying on faith and desire, Increasing qualities such as mindfulness, Antidote to all afflictions, Possessing qualities such as non-attachment, For those, there are those seven. Having fully understood such diligence, The wise will truly practice." Thus it is said. Joy in virtue is the essence, Faith and desire are the cause, Increasing mindfulness and samadhi, etc., are the result, A virtuous mind without the three poisons is endowed with qualities. If divided, then each of the three trainings constantly does with the body, respectfully does, constantly does with the speech, respectfully does, constantly does with the mind, respectfully does, two by two, there are six, plus armor-like diligence, there are seven. The qualities are, In the Ornament of the Sutras, it says: "The sons of the Victorious Ones, with the nature of donning armor, do unparalleled diligence, Destroying the aggregates of afflictions of oneself and others, attaining supreme Bodhi. Merely relying on that diligence, also placing all beings in the three Bodhis, Diligence is completely seized by wisdom, so it leaves inexhaustible in the world." Thus it is said. Regarding meditation, there are also ten aspects, among which, The teaching of the cause of accomplishing meditation is: Now meditation will be explained, first teaching the cause of accomplishing meditation. Wanting meditation, one should abandon distraction and busyness, The joy of objects is like autumn clouds, Like lightning, unstable is the nature of moving, Enjoyment is like an unreal illusory palace, Never trustworthy, abandon those, Quickly rely on the peaceful forest. Because all conditioned phenomena are impermanent, all wealth is moving, life is impermanent, at no time is there essence, so one should diligently meditate alone in the peaceful forest. As it says in the Pratimoksha Sutra: "Those who have heard much in the forest, The dwelling of those whose youth has passed is happiness." Thus it is said. In the Words of Seclusion, it says: "Enjoyment is like lightning playing in the clouds, This life is like water adhering to a lotus grove moved by the wind, quickly decaying, Deceptive youth, embodied beings, having observed thus, quickly, The wise should train in the supreme yoga that quickly accomplishes the samadhi of meditation." Thus it is said. Not
