Because patience arises from relying on (suffering), it itself is the cause of patience, and it should be offered to like offering to the holy Dharma. That's it. Thinking that the cause of anger arises from oneself is like this. Furthermore, if there is no self, (anger) will not arise, like an echo, they are mutually dependent. This multitude of harms caused by one's own misdeeds arises from temporary causes and past karma. This is bound to happen, and for this method of exhausting karma, one must persevere in subduing one's mind alone. Like this, if oneself does not exist at all, one will not be angry or argue with others, because anger and argument are mutually dependent. If one does not harm others first, others will not harm oneself, so harming others meaninglessly must be endured. As it says in the Bodhicharyavatara: If one does not harm others first, no one will harm oneself. Therefore, it is like finding a treasure at home without effort. Because (the enemy) has become a friend of the Bodhisattva's conduct, I should be happy with the enemy. That's it. Moreover, the harm to me is also caused by a few conditions. That also arises from one's own past karma, so it should be endured. As it says in the Bodhicharyavatara: I have done such harm to sentient beings in the past. Therefore, sentient beings harm me, and I should suffer this harm. That's it. Even if anger arises from harm, it needs to be examined. If one is angry because of indirect harm, one should be angry with one's own karma. As it says in the Bodhicharyavatara: My karma has driven those who harm me to appear. That's it. If one is angry because of direct harm, one should be angry with the shape of sticks and so on, or with unpleasant and rough words. As it says in the Bodhicharyavatara: If one is angry with those who use sticks and so on and throw them. That is also because one is deluded by hatred, so one should be angry with hatred. That's it. In particular, if one is angry because others say unpleasant words, one should not be angry with the person who says them to oneself, but should be angry with others, because that is what causes suffering. Furthermore, if one thinks that praise and fame will bring harm, they will lead you to the lower realms. On the contrary, only patience can avoid that. As it says in the Bodhicharyavatara: I am seeking liberation, and I do not need wealth and respect to bind me. How can I be angry with those who bind me and liberate me?

I wish to enter into suffering, But the Buddha, like a blessing, Does not let go, like a door bolt, Why should I be angry at that? And it is said: If I, through my own fault, Cannot endure these things, Then the cause of merit is nearby, Am I not just creating obstacles? Thus it is. Furthermore, it is not reasonable to be angry because utensils are damaged. If one has karma, then it will not be damaged. If one does not, then even blessings are of no benefit. One must leave everything behind, like waking from a dream. And the faults of wealth are immeasurable, being the cause of bondage. As it is said: For the sake of obstructing gain, If I do not desire these things, I should abandon this gain here, And sinful deeds will remain firm. I would rather die today, Than live long in a wrong livelihood. Even if I stay here for a long time, The suffering of death is the same. Having experienced happiness in a dream for a hundred years, What is it like when one wakes up? Another having experienced happiness for a moment, What is it like when one wakes up? For both of those who have awakened, That happiness does not return. Both long life and short life, Are the same at the time of death. Having obtained many possessions, And enjoyed happiness for a long time, Like being robbed by thieves, One goes away naked and empty-handed. Thus it is said. It is also not reasonable to be angry because one's reputation is damaged, for reputation is just words. Words are inanimate objects, so there is no benefit at all. As it is said: The order of praise and fame, Does not turn into merit, nor does it turn into thorns, Does not turn into strength, nor is it without illness, Nor does it turn into bodily comfort. If I understand my own purpose, What is my own purpose in that? If one desires only mental happiness, Then one must rely on ornaments and alcohol, etc. For the sake of fame, giving away wealth, And even killing one's own body, What is the use of words and syllables? Who benefits from that happiness after death? If a sandcastle collapses, The children will cry in sadness. Likewise, when praise and fame decline, One's own mind is like a child. Thus it is said. If one thinks of being angry because of unpleasantness, if one is angry because of unpleasant words, since those are his own words, why be angry? Even if one wants to speak, one should not be angry because of the arrogance of others. However, if one is angry because of displeasure, then one should be angry at one's own mind.
