Above, one possesses the two bodhicittas of aspiration and engagement. The bodhisattva vow alone does not have the seven distinctions of individual liberation. Namely, male and female lay practitioners (upāsaka and upāsikā) two each, male and female novices (śrāmaṇera and śrāmaṇerikā) two each, male and female monks (bhikṣu and bhikṣuṇī) two each, the śikṣamāṇā, and male and female observers of the eight precepts (upavāsa) two each, totaling nine. However, from the perspective of laypeople, the two vows of lay practitioners and observers of the eight precepts, and from the perspective of renunciants, the five categories of novice, probationary nun, and monk are grouped together. Therefore, it is said that one possesses the two bodhicittas on top of these. Furthermore, the Ornament of the Sutras states: "The side of those who have renounced, is endowed with immeasurable qualities. Therefore, the bodhisattva householders who strive in vows, are said to be superior to all bodhisattvas." Thus, it explains the bodhisattvas who have renounced. The sutra states: "The bodhisattvas who are householders, and those who have renounced, and those who abide in the form of boys and girls, the billions upon billions of many, also have the same method." Among these, there are two types of lay practitioners. The lay practitioner who observes a few things, etc., is one who observes the four root vows or any one of the four, and abandons wrong sexual conduct. The celibate lay practitioner abandons the four root vows and alcohol, and in addition to that, abandons impure conduct. The novice is, as stated in the Radiant One: "Whoever abandons killing, stealing others' wealth, impure conduct, lying, concocted alcohol, etc., dancing, garlands, etc., large high beds, etc., eating after noon, receiving gold and silver, etc." One upholds these ten precepts of training, and also protects one's mind from faults that are contrary to this. The śikṣamāṇā, on top of that discipline, adds twelve things to be abandoned, such as not touching a man, which are antidotal virtues. Because women have strong afflictions, they study for two years, etc., to observe whether they are stable or able to do it. The monk has four defeats, thirteen remainders, thirty expiations, etc., two hundred and fifty-three vows, and the nun has three hundred and sixty-four, etc. These are the places of learning in the vows of the different schools of the Sarvāstivāda, the Mahāsāṃghika, the Sthavira, and the Dharmaguptaka. The Bodhisattva-bhūmi of Maitreya states: "The learning of the renunciant"

Upon those vows, if one possesses and has not lost the aspiration and practice of Bodhicitta, then one is said to be a Bodhisattva who has gone forth. Such precepts refer to the discipline of restraining oneself from evil deeds, which is called the higher discipline of morality. These also include the mind of renunciation and the seeds of virtue. It is said in the Bodhisattvacharyavatara: If the mind of renunciation is attained, it is said that the perfection of morality is complete. That is to say, the part of restraining one's own evil deeds, thereby preventing non-virtue, is the Pratimoksha vow, which is for the sake of obtaining the bodies of gods and humans in Samsara and obtaining one's own happiness. The part of not harming others and accomplishing benefits is said to be the Bodhisattva vow. The Mantrayana vow is on top of that, abandoning the ordinary clinging to actions and afflictions, making it suitable to be a vessel for practicing the two stages. That is to say, if one counts from the time of the Pratimoksha vow, the ten non-virtuous actions are naturally negative, so there is no allowance. For the Bodhisattva, there are seven situations allowed for the benefit of others. In Mantrayana, one does not abandon them, but relies on them as an aid to skillful means, like producing fire from wood, as a cause for generating wisdom, and it is distinguished by the profound path. In the continuum of one person, the essence is the same, but the aspects of reversal are different. If one measures the object, then one protects the higher, because the lower part is included in the higher. The lower and the form seem contradictory, but because the essence is not lost, there is no contradiction at all. For example, in the common practices of Mantrayana, drinking alcohol is a downfall for the Hearers, and Bodhisattvas say it is a similar fault, but it does not become a fault, because at that time the object must be a Bhikshu or a Bodhisattva. At that time, because one arises as a deity, the basis is transformed into another. The substance must be intoxicating alcohol, but it is said that through Mantra, Mudra, and Samadhi, it is transformed into nectar and enjoyed. The concept of mind must not be transformed into another, one must abide in the concept of deity, Mandala, and nectar, etc., therefore, on the basis of being without fault, because one offers to the deity, the accumulation is completed, and because it becomes an aid to the practice of view and Samadhi, it is like having more increasing qualities. In the same way,
