When taming the wandering ascetics, if one speaks of transgressions due to arising wrong views, it's like saying there are none. However, it's understandable if only the body and speech express wrong views towards the wandering ascetics. But if wrong views arise in the mind, then where do the praises of the Three Jewels that they speak of in between come from? Therefore, mental actions are never allowed. If committing unwholesome deeds with body and speech leads to sin, like consuming poison, then if a virtuous mind is controlled by something like a poisonous mantra, there is no sin. As stated in the "Twenty Verses on Discipline": "Possessing compassion and love, there is no sin in a virtuous mind." So it is. If the "Mindfulness Sutra" states that even killing one sentient being will cause one to be tormented in the hell of proximity for one intermediate kalpa, and therefore one should never commit sins, it should be understood that the Buddha's teachings are based on the levels of sentient beings' minds. Sometimes it is said to be one, sometimes many, sometimes definite, and sometimes indefinite, but it should be understood that there is no contradiction. As stated in the "Praise of Speech": "From permission and prohibition, your teachings are sometimes definite as one, and sometimes not definite, but there is no contradiction between them." Therefore, it is very important to understand the order of the explicit and implicit meanings, as well as the four levels of having intention and needing interpretation. These distinctions will be explained in detail below. Learning by knowing what should be known, as stated in the "Ornament of the Sutras": "There is nothing that the bodhisattvas do not learn; that does not exist anywhere." Therefore, one must diligently study worldly academics and places, as well as all worldly and transmundane dharmas, through hearing, thinking, and learning, because one must attain omniscience. In short, one must study the five sciences: crafts, medicine, grammar, logic, and inner science. As stated in the same text: "If one does not strive in the five sciences, even the noble ones cannot attain omniscience. Therefore, one strives in them in order to subdue others, to guide others, and to know everything oneself." In particular, it is very important to understand and protect the order of the vows of learning. That is, according to the manner previously shown, transgressions and non-transgressions.

It should be known that agreement, precepts, and purification are fivefold. The root downfalls are twenty. Not having downfalls and engaging in virtuous deeds is non-falling. Agreement refers to being in accordance with the side of virtue and being in accordance with the side of non-virtuous downfalls. The distinction between these two is that misdeeds are also of two types: misdeeds arising from afflictions and misdeeds arising from meaningless actions. For example, engaging in jokes and watching performances, etc., if generated by attachment and aversion, are misdeeds arising from afflictions. Even if generated by attachment and aversion, but engaging meaninglessly without maintaining mindfulness and awareness, are misdeeds arising from meaningless actions. If engaging without attachment for the sake of others, there is no downfall. If engaging with attachment, it is a misdeed of that part, which is agreement. Even if engaging merely for the sake of others' happiness, it is the same. As an antidote, meditating on impermanence, etc., is a precept. If seeing faults and making amends through confession and restraint, it is purification. To give another example, digging the ground, cutting trees, etc., without connection to virtuous deeds, are meaningless misdeeds. If it is for the sake of the virtuous side, there is no downfall. Meaninglessly drawing patterns on the ground, etc., without mindfulness, is agreement. Maintaining mindfulness and awareness is a precept. Remembering the precepts and correcting and guarding against them is purification. Similarly, all actions of body, speech, and mind should be understood by applying this analogy. If vows are degenerated, one should also know the method of restoring them. If the aspiration is degenerated, then restore it. The causes of degeneration are three: timidity, laziness, and entering other paths. Timidity refers to thinking that someone like me cannot benefit others, and thus giving up. As an antidote to this, at this time of obtaining leisure and endowments and generating bodhicitta, one should abandon timidity and uplift one's confidence. As stated in the Ornament of the Sutras: 'Because sentient beings become human, in each moment immeasurable, perfect enlightenment is obtained; therefore, timidity should not be embraced.' Laziness refers to not seeing the benefits of the path but seeing the faults of hardships, and thus becoming lazy and giving up. As an antidote to this, showing the benefits and joy and advising endurance. As stated in the Guide to the Bodhisattva's Way of Life: 'Therefore, riding the horse of bodhicitta, which dispels all weariness, from happiness to happiness, who with intelligence would be lazy and retreat?' The Great Vehicle
