Towards elders, middle-aged, and younger individuals who behave similarly, one should show respect and reverence, as it is said in the Jataka tales: "The holy ones are not despised by anyone; one should rely on a spiritual friend with humility. Being near them, even without deliberately seeking, one will share in their qualities." After that, even the slightest secret misdeeds and carelessness should not be done, as it says: "Doing evil unseen is like eating poison; how can one find happiness? It is impossible for gods and yogis not to see with their pure eyes." After that, one should be mindful of the difficulty of obtaining leisure and endowments, the rarity of the Buddha's appearance, and so on, thereby maintaining diligence. As it is said in the Sutra Requested by King Udayana: "The Buddha is the benefit of the world, a great upright one, who may appear only once in hundreds of millions of eons. Now that precious leisure has been obtained, those who desire liberation should abandon carelessness." After that, in order to protect the Dharma, one should slightly protect this body from illness and harm, and regard it as a boat. Therefore, in terms of food and clothing, one should not be negligent in any way. One should not torment oneself with meaningless ascetic practices such as silent retreats. As it is said in the Bodhicharyavatara: "For the mere support of coming and going, regard the body as a boat, and for the sake of accomplishing the benefit of sentient beings, transform it into a wish-fulfilling body." And in the Four Hundred Verses it says: "Although one sees this body as an enemy, even so, it should be protected. Living long with discipline, one obtains great merit from it." One should also keep in mind impermanence and the aspiration for enlightenment. As it is said in the Tale of the Seven Young Women: "For the body and life that will be abandoned, like dew on a blade of grass, having become accustomed to it for a long time without concern, when will one obtain great happiness?" One should also give up wealth to protect life, and for the great Dharma such as generating the mind of enlightenment, one should protect it even at the cost of one's life. As it is said in the Sutra Admonishing the King: "I give up wealth to protect the body, I give up wealth and body to protect life, I give up wealth, body, and life as well, and here I protect the Dharma." Therefore, examine your mind and

Because of abandoning watching, afflictions will not arise. Brahma asked (the Buddha) and said: If you fully understand the faults of the mind, you will not rely on the faults of having a mind. If mindfulness is well established in the mind, you will attain the state of peace without faults. Thus it is said. Furthermore, toothpicks, saliva, and excrement, etc., should also be discarded in secluded places where people do not use them, so that they are not visible. In the "Entering the Bodhisattva's Way of Life" it says: Toothpicks and saliva should be covered when discarded. It is inferior to discard urine, etc., in the water and land that are used. Thus it is said. In the Vinaya, it is also said that one should not discard waste at the source of water, etc. Also, when eating, it is the same. It says there: It is not proper to eat with a mouth full of food, making noises, or with an open mouth. Wherever you live, especially when living among lamas and the masses, if the behavior of the body is not beautiful, such as sleeping, straddling, stretching your legs, rubbing your hands, etc., you should not do it, but sit upright. In any case, you must be dignified. It says there: Do not sit with your legs stretched out, and do not rub your hands together. In vehicles, mattresses, and dwellings, do not be alone with other women. All those who have become disbelievers in the world, all those who are seen, heard, and associated with, should be abandoned. Thus it is said. Furthermore, all the unrestrained aspects of jumping, running, watching, laughing, flirting, etc., whatever is present in the three doors of body, speech, and mind, should be restrained, and taming should be the main thing. In the Vinaya Garland of Flowers it says: Singing, dancing, gambling, throwing, running, etc., all watching and participating in them are offenses, and are the cause of attacking the life of discipline. Thus it is said. Since such things are far from enlightenment, they must be abandoned. In the Sutra Requested by King Udayana, it says: Those who are not disciplined, wild and arrogant, disrespectful, full of pride, strongly attached, overwhelmed by afflictions, base and full of afflictions, for such people, supreme enlightenment is very far away. Thus it is said. Moreover, since one cannot tame others without being peaceful and disciplined oneself, one must first be peaceful and disciplined oneself. In the Praise of Infinite Qualities it says: Some people, even though they are not tamed themselves, speak reasonable words, but their actions contradict their words, so they cannot tame others. Considering this, for this reason, you keep all beings in your heart, and for a while, tame yourself.
