In order to be able to endure, one should not feel weary. As it is said in the Ratnavali: For the sake of immeasurable sentient beings, Desiring immeasurable Bodhi, Performing immeasurable virtuous deeds, Even though Bodhi is immeasurable, With immeasurable four accumulations, Without accumulating for a long time, How can one not attain it? The so-called boundless merit and boundless wisdom, Quickly eliminate the suffering of body and mind. Sin leads to evil destinies, and the body experiences suffering such as hunger and thirst. If one does not commit sins, through merit, In other realms, there will be no such suffering. Ignorance leads to mental suffering, Such as attachment, fear, and desire. Through wisdom without support, One can quickly abandon these sufferings. If one is not severely wounded by the suffering of body and mind, Even if one guides beings to the end of the world, why be weary? Experiencing suffering, even for a short time, Is difficult to endure, what need to mention a long time? Without suffering and only happiness, What harm is there in endless time? There is no physical suffering there, How can there be mental suffering? He dwells in the world with compassion, He also dwells there for a long time. Therefore, do not be discouraged because it takes a long time to become a Buddha, Those with wisdom do not become lazy. To eliminate faults and accomplish qualities, One should always strive for this. Thus it is said. Furthermore, if one thinks, how can one endure staying in samsara for a long time for the benefit of sentient beings? It is not like that, because there is Bodhicitta, so it is happiness. Because it is not suffering, one must also endure. As it is said in the Bodhicharyavatara: With merit, the body is happy, With wisdom, the mind is happy, Even if one stays in samsara for the benefit of others, Why should those with compassion be weary? This, through the power of Bodhicitta, Can exhaust past sins, And accumulate an ocean of merit, Therefore, it is superior to the Shravakas. Therefore, riding the horse of Bodhicitta that eliminates all weariness, Going from happiness to happiness, Which sentient being would become lazy? Thus it is said. Furthermore, all sentient beings are of the nature of illusion, painting, and sky, originally unborn, but appearing, so doing things does not need to be real, therefore one should also rejoice. As it is said in the Suhrllekha: The mind is like water

And understand the same way with earth, stones, and drawn patterns. As it says, and in the Ratnakuta Sutra: For example, even if the realm of space were to pass through more kalpas than the sands of the Ganges River, it would not be weary or discouraged. For the realm of space has no birth, destruction, burning, or separation. Why is that? Because the realm of space has no substance. Similarly, any Bodhisattva who knows that all phenomena are without substance will not generate a mind of weariness, fatigue, or complete discouragement. In this way, one should strive for enlightenment and engage in the work of benefiting others without weariness or fatigue. Other aspects of this can be contemplated as they appear in the instructions of the Great Vehicle, and one must accomplish the thirteen benefits. What are they? Like this, all sentient beings have equally been my parents again and again, and at that time, they have only helped with love, so to repay their kindness, one must also work for the benefit of sentient beings. In the Arya Mahaparinirvana Sutra, it says: If this great earth were made into pea-sized balls, and one were to count the number of times a single sentient being has been one's father and mother, this great earth would be exhausted, but the number of times a single sentient being has been one's father and mother would not be exhausted. Furthermore, if one does not repay the kindness bestowed by sentient beings, one will be burdened by the heavy load of ingratitude, so to eliminate that burden, one must also benefit sentient beings. In the Vinayavibhanga, it says: Lands and mountains, and oceans are not my burden, but ingratitude is my great burden. This is the way it is. Furthermore, if sentient beings were happy and content, I would not need to help them. However, for our sake, they have previously committed sins and are oppressed by the suffering of samsara and the lower realms, so to eliminate the fault of owing them, one must also work for the benefit of sentient beings. Furthermore, all sentient beings desire happiness, and not a single one desires suffering, but they are confused about the means to achieve happiness and are tormented only by suffering, so to turn them away from suffering, one must also benefit sentient beings. Furthermore, countless sentient beings have been led by the Buddhas of the past, but

If I do not lead these beings whom I am unable to tame, the lineage of the Mahayana will be cut off, and beings will be without protection, so I must accomplish their benefit. Furthermore, due to the influence of clinging to self, being stirred by the winds of afflictions and becoming inverted, it is said that one should strive to make aspirations in order to tame them. Whatever beneficial things are done, one should contemplate, 'May this accomplish their benefit.' One should meditate in this way from one being to the extent of space. The exchange of self and other is: Having developed certainty in this, one should give all of one's own happiness and virtue to them with a strong intention, and think that through their merit, one will temporarily attain the heavens and ultimately attain Buddhahood. One should accept their suffering of bad karma as if exchanging clothes, and think that it ripens in one's own continuum, and for their sake, one experiences many sufferings such as those of the hells. From the depths of one's heart, from the depths of one's bones, one should make such an exchange, and having developed certainty for one being, one should do this for all beings. By doing this, one purifies the great mass of beginningless sins, and it exhausts many karmas that would cause one to experience the lower realms in the future, and it causes one to attain many happinesses. The Bodhicharyavatara says: 'If one does not completely exchange one's own happiness for the suffering of others, one will not attain Buddhahood, let alone happiness in samsara.' This is its meaning. Here, some say, 'All phenomena are like conditions, abiding at the peak of intention.' It is not right to do that, because one will fall into samsara forever. Also, some say that even when one has done a non-virtuous deed, it can be transformed into a virtuous deed by dedicating it with the intention of bodhichitta, because there is a special intention, so it can be dedicated, but this is actually the secret language of demons. However, such an answer should be given: If one wanders in samsara by aspiring to the end of future lives for the sake of others, then Manjushri should also wander in samsara, because his aspiration says: 'For the sake of each and every being, may I remain at the end of future lives.' Having done the exchange of self and other, it is not that one actually exchanges with beings, and even if one did, it would be very good, because it is a great merit. The being and I who are exchanged by mind are both one's own mind.
