Casting the arrow of emptiness at the dharma of assembled things; Transforming emptiness into the experience of the path of appearance; Seeing appearance as measurable by the knowledge of wisdom; This wisdom arises from the supreme teachers. Skillfully transforming all afflictions into excellence, Whatever thorn of thought cannot be transformed; This is the certain arising from the essence of pith instructions, Which will surely be found through the power of the venerable one. Therefore, whoever possesses the blessings of the lineage, The wise should always rely on skillful means. Thus it is said. Secondly, how to rely on the method in two parts. The example of the method of relying is shown: How should one rely on such a lama? Just as a sick person relies on the king of doctors, the people rely on the king, the traveler relies on the guide, the merchant relies on the captain, and the boatman relies on the helmsman. To pacify afflictions, to be free from all faults, to escape the fear of birth and death, for the spontaneous accomplishment of two benefits, to cross the ocean of existence, one should rely on the lama. That is, to pacify the disease of afflictions, the sick person relies on the doctor; to protect from the fear of offenses, the people rely on the king; to be liberated from the fear of birth and death, the traveler relies on the guide; to accomplish the two benefits of oneself and others, the merchant relies on the captain; and like the boatman relying on the helmsman to cross the river of samsara. Having explained the method of relying on the lama, Relying on the lama like a doctor is: First, relying on the lama in the manner of a sick person relying on a doctor: the lama is like a doctor, the instructions are like medicine, one establishes oneself as having the perception of a sick person, diligent effort is like relying on medicine itself, and one obtains the result of peace, happiness, and liberation from illness. Other methods of reliance are measured by this method, and one should rely on the four pure perceptions. That is, in the Sutra of the Array of Trees, it says: Son of good family, you should generate the perception of a sick person in yourself, generate the perception of medicine in the Dharma, generate the perception of nourishing the sick in diligent practice, and generate the perception of a skilled doctor in the virtuous friend. Again, son of good family, you should generate the perception of the people in yourself, in
