Such as these. One should contemplate as oneself, therefore the six elements are without self. Thus it is. How is it without? Even if one examines the elements of the body at the time when sentient beings appear, there is none. Furthermore, since consciousness is not seen as the basis and the dependent in that, one does not perceive self and what belongs to self. If one examines and investigates, it is because it is empty of its own nature. That is, from that very text: Just as water, tree branches, are all destroyed, as if there is nothing, so too is a person, it is the same when destroyed with the aggregates. All phenomena are without self, therefore the Victors have spoken. Thus it is. That which appears as merely seeing and hearing is neither true nor false, because truth and falsehood are dharmas constructed by the mind. From that very text: Seeing and hearing, etc., the Sage has spoken of as neither true nor false. Thus it is. This world is beyond truth and falsehood. Thus it is. Thus, all dharmas are beyond truth and falsehood, and are like water and trees. It is also said in the King of Samadhi Sutra: Just as water, a wet tree trunk, although a person splits it wanting its essence, there is no essence inside and outside everywhere. Know that all dharmas are like that. Thus it is. As a sign of accomplishment, at the same time as love arises, like water and a tree, one simultaneously realizes the nature of beings or the nature of selflessness. The Result of Cultivating Loving-Kindness What is its result like? If one sees the result, one obtains pleasing purity. Thus, if all sentient beings see it, they will be pleased, and sentient beings will also be pleased to see it, and one will obtain purity from defilements such as attachment and aversion. As it says in the Eight Thousand Verse Prajnaparamita Sutra: One who has a loving heart, if they cultivate it much and make it stable, then seeing beings is pleasing, they are without anger. One also obtains immeasurable merit. In the Sutra of Great Liberation Expanding in the Ten Directions it says: If in all the worlds, for the duration of one kalpa, one guards pure morality, it is not equal to the joy of a person for a moment. Therefore, practicing loving-kindness is supreme. Whoever in this world realm, commits sins with body, speech, and mind, although they are certain to fall into the three lower realms, loving-kindness will quickly purify them. Thus it is. Third, Cultivating Compassion has Seven Aspects: The Suffering of Beings

Thinking about suffering is: Now compassion should be shown, like that, with love pervading beings, just as the suffering of parents is unbearable, thinking about the suffering of beings and generating compassion. That is, these kind parents of mine, for our sake, have committed sinful deeds, and are tormented by the suffering of the three lower realms, etc., how pitiful, I will deliver them. As the Middle Length Sutra says: When seeing suffering beings, one should think, may these beings be free from suffering. Explaining the method of cultivating compassion is: How is the method of cultivation? That is, these kind parents of mine, for my sake, have committed sinful deeds, and are tormented by cold and heat, hunger and thirst, killing and servitude, drowning in the great stream of birth, old age, sickness, and death, tormented by various kinds of suffering. Like this, for our sake, they have committed sinful deeds, and now each is experiencing suffering, how pitiful. Explaining true compassion is: Now still suffering, without a peaceful mind wanting to be liberated from that suffering, and without a virtuous friend who can point out the right path, wandering in the endless cycle of samsara, how pitiful. Seeing these, can one bear to abandon them? Like this, although the beings of samsara are suffering, they do not know the method of liberation from it, and virtuous friends only point out the path of liberation to a few, not to everyone. Now still endlessly cycling and suffering, there are no beings who have not been my parents and relatives before, so abandoning these helpless beings, like abandoning parents, is not proper. As the Encouragement to Higher Intention Sutra says: In whose womb this body was found and abided, who took this body with loving care, abandoning these afflicted, suffering, helpless beings, even a base person, who would be willing? Explaining the reason for compassion is: The reason is, therefore, may my body and possessions, and the merit accumulated in the three times, enable the suffering of beings to be freed in an instant. Think like this from the depths of your heart. Like this, may my happiness and all merit be transferred to beings, may they be freed from suffering and attain happiness.
