How could there be malice? Although wanting desires and happiness, I will definitely prevent engaging in non-virtue, the cause of suffering! The actual focus of equanimity is: Alas! The miserable masses of sentient beings' afflictions, may the mind be balanced with the complete pacification of all habitual tendencies! May all embodied beings tormented by intense attachment and aversion, be free from closeness and distance, with a balanced mind, may they be free from attachment and aversion! Thus, may all the afflictions of sentient beings be pacified! In particular, may the fires of attachment and aversion be extinguished, and may a workable mind without closeness and distance arise! Expanding the focus of equanimity is: Thinking thus, from one sentient being to two and three, from one place to one continent, from four continents, to a thousand, two thousand, three thousand worlds, meditate on all the worlds. That is, for a beginner, meditate until you are able to cultivate equanimity towards your own enemies and friends. Then, from one, two, three sentient beings, etc., to all your own villages, and then to the area and Jambudvipa (Southern Jambudvipa). Then, from Jambudvipa to a thousand worlds, two thousand worlds, three thousand worlds, meditate on all the world realms. That is, first on humans, and then equally meditate on all beings such as animals. The measure of mastering equanimity in the mindstream is: That (equanimity) in one's own mindstream, the measure of arising is the equality of self and others, enemies and friends. Having obtained such a mind, jealousy and anger will not arise towards anyone, but equality will occur. The post-meditation of cultivating equanimity is: Thus, after cultivating equanimity with focus, in the session break, in equanimity without an object, everything is mind, the nature of mind is like space. In the state of ultimate unborn emptiness, rest in the aspect of wisdom free from elaboration. That is, the object to be meditated upon, these things that appear as sentient beings, are also like images, although they appear without existence, rest in the state of being unborn by nature. That is, both the aggregates of the object to be grasped, and the clinging to self other than that, are false in nature, just as on the image in the mirror, the delusion "this is my face", it appears without existence, and relies on the aggregates. As it is said in the Precious Garland: Just as relying on a mirror, although the images of oneself and others appear, but that in reality, does not exist at all. Similarly, relying on the aggregates, the clinging to self is foolish.

It also becomes a fault. Like the image of one's own face, it is not truly existent. Just as without relying on a mirror, the image of one's own nature cannot appear. Without relying on the aggregates, the clinging to self is also like that. Thus it is said. If there is clinging to the aggregates of one's own nature as self, then there will be karma. Because there is karma, there will be birth, and therefore there will be old age and death. If there is no clinging to the aggregates, then all of these will be eliminated. As it says in that very text: As long as there is clinging to the aggregates, then from that will arise the clinging to self. If there is clinging to self, there will also be karma, and from that, birth will arise again. The three paths, without beginning, end, or middle, the wheel of samsara, like a wheel of fire, mutually, with causes and conditions, revolve in samsara. Because that is neither self nor other, and is not obtained from the three times, therefore, the clinging to self will be exhausted. Therefore, when seeing karma and birth, and such cause and effect of birth, and their exhaustion, one will not think that the world exists or does not exist. Thus it is said. Therefore, one should know that all phenomena, like an image, have no object that can be clung to as "I" and "mine." The benefit of cultivating equanimity is: After cultivating in this way, the extent of accomplishment is the arising of profound and peaceful realization. That is, the realization of the equality of all phenomena, whose nature is originally unborn, arises. As it says in the Kun Byed: In the inconceivable Dharma nature of Bodhi, by abiding in non-duality, wisdom arises. Thus it is said. The fruit of equanimity is: The fruit of cultivating in this way is a mind without near, far, or defilement. In the meaning of reality, self-nature is spontaneously accomplished. That is, in terms of conventional truth, there is no self, other, near, or far, and in terms of ultimate truth, one will realize the non-dual Dharma nature. After becoming extremely accustomed to this, one should first cultivate loving-kindness. Secondly, there are also five aspects to cultivating loving-kindness, the further increase of loving-kindness is: The reason as previously stated. After having equanimity towards all beings in this way, just as one's own mother wants to attain happiness, one should also think of all sentient beings in the same way. That is, after having equanimity, just as one cherishes one's parents, one should cultivate loving-kindness by holding all sentient beings in one's heart as one's parents. As it says in the Eight Thousand Verse Sutra: A Shravaka and Pratyekabuddha with a mind of loving-kindness
