To illustrate with a pleasing metaphor: The land of loving-kindness is green and fertile, a dwelling place of joy for all beings. Flowers of compassion are adorned with various forms of blossoming. The forest of joy is cool and refreshing with shade, relied upon by many birds and wild animals. The ocean of equanimity, ponds, and the confluence of many streams of excellent springs, where travelers weary of existence can breathe, and one's own mind can rest and be purified, this is illustrated with tangible adornments. From the Intermediate Mother Sutra: Shariputra, Bodhisattva Mahasattvas should cultivate great loving-kindness, great compassion, great joy, and great equanimity. The second general meaning shows the difference First, explain the difference between this and that: If not related to the path of liberation, then the four Brahma-viharas are the cause of existence. These four, when seized by the path of peace, are the four immeasurables for crossing the ocean of existence. That is, from the Excellent Essence: Shariputra, here, the loving-kindness, compassion, joy, and equanimity of not generating or not subsequently generating the correct mind are the four Brahma-viharas, accompanied by manifest actions. Generating the correct mind, the subsequently generated loving-kindness, compassion, joy, and equanimity are the four immeasurables, because they are directed towards the path of nirvana. The third general meaning shows the difference of the object of focus That is, The object of focus is the infinite nature of beings and phenomena, All-pervasive, with and without focus. Thus, the object of focus of the four immeasurables is all beings, giving rise to the four immeasurables with the aspect of mind focusing. The nature of all phenomena, that is, suchness, as the object of focus, gives rise to the four immeasurables without the aspect of mind focusing. From the Earth Chapter: Relying on sentient beings and the nature of phenomena, the four immeasurables with and without focus arise. The fourth general meaning also has two parts, first showing the fault of the impure object of focus This is, The former is limited, a few beings, The object of focus is impure, with focus, the cause of Brahma. The object of focus of the four Brahma-viharas is sentient beings.

Limited things like one and two, the mind's forms arise as four, such as loving-kindness, but these are not seized by the mind of liberation. For example, when a woman with her young child crosses the Ganges River, they spend their lives loving each other, and as a result, they are born in the Brahma realm, becoming a cause for samsara. As it is said in the Bodhisattvacaryāvatāra: "Whatever fruit arises from a single clear thought, like being born in the Brahma realm." This is the principle. Incidentally, advising to train in the four immeasurables of liberation Therefore, after the distinct knowledge has gone forth, these four immeasurables, since this is to engage in aimless liberation, should be trained by those with a compassionate nature. Because those who desire liberation should only train in the manner of the four immeasurables with aim and form. Fifth general meaning, explaining the actual object Now, explaining the object of the four immeasurables. Not possessing happiness, afflicted by suffering, happy and prosperous, having attachment and aversion to near and far. The object of loving-kindness, compassion, joy, and equanimity. Here, the object of the four immeasurables that focus on sentient beings is: not possessing happiness, afflicted by suffering, happy and prosperous in their own happiness, beings with attachment and aversion to near and far. As it is said in the Ornament of the Sutras: "The steadfast desire happiness for those who are afflicted by suffering and happiness, and those with afflictions as well." Sixth general meaning, explaining the aspect The aspect is: the aspect of wanting to obtain happiness and be free from suffering, not to be separated from joy, and to have an equanimous and workable mind. That is, in those four objects, there is no suffering, they are endowed with happiness, they are not separated from joy, and having abandoned attachment and aversion, the mind is loving and equally balanced. As it is said in that very text: "You who have compassion for all sentient beings, who have the intention of separation and freedom, who have the intention of non-separation, who intend benefit and happiness, I prostrate to you." Thus. The essence is to be free from the four opposing sides of each. As it is said in that very text: "The steadfast abandon the opposing factors of Brahma, they possess non-conceptual wisdom, they engage in the three objects, and they fully ripen all sentient beings." Thus. That is, abandoning the opposing sides of each, as it is said in the commentary of that very text: Not thinking of others, focusing on the three objects of happiness, suffering, and neutrality, is beneficial to sentient beings.

When focusing on an object, that which is merely without pleasure is the object of equanimity. Those tormented by suffering, and those with attachment and aversion, because they abide in the cause and effect of suffering, are the object of suffering. Joy is happiness, which is the object of pleasure; the three objects enter the three wisdoms. Similarly, the four immeasurables that focus on the Dharma are the four that arise from hearing the scriptures. The four immeasurables that focus on the nature of Dharma are the realization that their own nature is unborn. Or, the four immeasurables related to the continuum of not realizing selflessness, realizing half of selflessness and selflessness, and realizing both, are called that. As it says in the Bodhisattva-bhumi: Focusing on sentient beings is common with the non-Buddhists. Focusing on the Dharma is common with all the Hearers and Solitary Buddhas. Not focusing is not common with all of them. That is, arising from relying on the three: sentient beings, Dharma, and non-focusing; and arising from the four as explained; and it is said to arise from seeing the six opposing factors of the six perfections. As it says in the Ornament of the Sutras: Generate love for the stingy and love for the untamed. Generate love for all the confused and love for the reckless. Generate compassion for those under the control of others, and generate compassion for those with wrong views. So it says. It is also said to arise from ten objects. As it says in that same text: Fiercely burning, fallen under the power of enemies, oppressed by suffering, obscured by darkness, entered on a difficult path, perfectly endowed with great bonds, attached to great food mixed with poison, the path is completely lost, completely entered on the wrong path, those sentient beings with little strength, generate compassion. So it says. The afflictions are burning like fire, and although they have entered the path, they are obstructed by demons, the three lower realms, being ignorant of the cause and effect of karma, entering the path of perversion, being tightly bound by the knots of afflictions, tasting the bliss of meditative absorption, entering the path of Hearers and Solitary Realizers, and the first Bodhisattvas. These immeasurables arise from four conditions: the lineage or element that abides in its own nature is the causal condition. The virtuous friend who teaches the precepts of the four immeasurables is the dominant condition. Each of their respective objects.
