Wanting to obtain (refuge). Taking refuge in the Buddha is wanting to obtain the Buddha. Taking refuge in the Dharma is wanting to obtain the Dharma. Taking refuge in the Sangha is wanting to obtain the Sangha. Taking refuge in the Three Jewels in order to accomplish the benefit of oneself and others is the refuge of cause, as stated in the Ratnakuta Sutra: Monks, whether for your own sake or for the sake of others, take refuge in order to be liberated from fear and harm, and your desired wishes will be completely fulfilled. Secret mantra practitioners want to directly see their own mind nature, which is the Buddha nature that is naturally present now, therefore they take refuge in the common external Three Jewels, and non-commonly they place their own mind nature in the state of primordial non-arising. Among them, the Three Jewels of each mandala and the Three Jewels of the entire teaching are both considered as the refuge of cause, and taking refuge in them is the refuge of cause. One's own mind nature, the Three Jewels of self-born wisdom, are inherently present, this is the refuge of result, and placing it single-pointedly without acceptance or rejection and without fabrication is the refuge of result. That is to say, the external Three Jewels, from the perspective of wanting to obtain the result, are the result, and from the perspective of promising to take refuge for this purpose, are the cause, although it can be considered in this way, mainly because it is spontaneously present in oneself, without desiring others, abiding in this state is the refuge of result, and taking refuge in the external Three Jewels as a conducive condition for accomplishing it is established as the refuge of cause. As stated in the Siddhi of Wisdom: To the lord of the three mandalas, if desiring other perfections, that is aspiring to the cause; while the mind nature of clear light, recognizing it as the master of the three mandalas, abiding single-pointedly, is rightly declared as the supreme result. Thus it is said. Here, there are two ways to identify the Three Jewels, among which the common Lesser Vehicle is: The Buddha is the emanation body of the supreme Buddha. The Dharma is the nature of teaching and realization, namely the twelve divisions of scripture, the paths of individual lineages, and samadhi, etc. The Sangha is the individual ordinary Sangha.

From the two Aryas, for each ordinary person, the small Sangha is the Shramanera parents and Upasaka men and women, etc., because it is the field of merit for sentient beings. The great one is the one who has received full ordination, that is, the great Sangha of Bhikshus, etc. That also requires four or more people to be called a Sangha gathering. The Aryas are those who have entered the stream, those who return once, those who do not return, and those who have entered the Arhatship. The one who abides is the Buddha. In the Mahayana, it is also famous that the Buddha is the nature of the three bodies, possessing two purities, and ultimately fulfilling the two benefits. As stated in the Ratnagotravibhāga: "Unmade and spontaneously accomplished, not realized by other conditions, possessing knowledge, compassion, and power, the Buddha possesses two benefits." The Dharma is the essence that cannot be spoken or conceived, the nature is the path to Buddhahood or the antidote, the aspect is the characteristic of the two truths of the path and cessation, which is the Dharma of meaning; the Dharma of words is the twelve divisions of scripture. Again, as stated in that treatise: "Without thought, without duality, without discrimination, pure, clear, and antidotal, whatever is free from attachment by whatever, that which is characterized by the two truths is the Dharma. The two free from attachment are included by the truth of cessation and the truth of the path." Among them, the two cessations are: the cessation that is individually examined by removing the previously existing defilements with the antidote and without elaboration; and the cessation that is not individually examined, which establishes the meaning that defilements or elaborations are inherently non-existent like space. The path is the part of realization of the accumulation, application, seeing, and meditation paths. Holding the characteristics of the two truths is all the Dharma of scripture and realization. The Sangha is the Arya who abides on the ten Bhumis, newly seeing the meaning of the luminosity of the nature of mind. As stated in that treatise: "Thus, all that exists, the inner meaning of all that exists, is seen by wisdom, and because it is pure, the assembly of those who do not turn back, possessing intelligence, is the one who possesses unsurpassed qualities." The uncommon aspect, in the Vajrayana, is accepted as different according to the different Tantra sections. In the Kriya and Charya Tantras, the Buddha Jewel is the nature of the five wisdoms and the three or four bodies, the purity of Dharmata and various transformations, and the deities of blessings, the three families of Tathagata, Padma, and Vajra.
