The absence of inherent existence is the very nature of the naturally pure mind. How it appears, divided by the qualities that blaze with marks and signs, is not different. However, it is distinguished by the nature of appearance and emptiness. The cultivated lineage, which is to generate bodhicitta and so forth upon it, is purified by practicing the means of the path of learning and wisdom, the two accumulations of merit and wisdom. As it says in the Arrangement of the Tree: "O sons of the Victorious Ones! This so-called lineage of enlightenment is to fully embrace the realm of phenomena, as vast as the sky, and after seeing the naturally clear light, to follow the great accumulations of merit and wisdom." As it is said: In the Uttaratantra it says: Like a treasure and a fruit tree, those two lineages are to be known. "The beginningless, naturally abiding one, and the perfectly acquired, supreme reality." "From these two lineages, one desires to attain the three bodies of the Buddha." "The first is the first body, the second is the latter two. The beauty of the Essence Body is to be known as a precious image, naturally unmade," "And because qualities are a precious treasure, the dharmic one has great royal power," "Therefore, the complete enjoyment is like a wheel-turning king. Because of the nature of an image, the emanation is like a golden image." Thus, the lineage of the Essence Body, the nature of mind abiding in its own nature, from the spontaneously accomplished state like a jewel, the dharmic nature of the lineage, the Enjoyment Body, the wheel-turning king, and the Emanation Body, the image of that, the basis for the supreme emanation appearing to those to be tamed, these are not visible when obscured by defilements in the state of sentient beings. Generating bodhicitta and so forth, the accumulation of merit removes the defilements obscuring the Form Body, and the accumulation of wisdom, meditating on emptiness and so forth, removes the defilements obscuring the Dharmata Essence Body. Moreover, the naturally abiding lineage is like clear water as a basis, and the cultivated lineage is like various images appearing, related to the basis and the based upon that have been present from the beginning. The lineage abiding in the ground in that way is like the object of knowledge, and the temporarily cultivated lineage is like the aspect of the knowing mind.

It is related to interdependence and dependence. The Dharma nature and Dharmata of the self-nature lineage exist in a state of separation, like the absence of a separated result. The proven lineage exists in the manner of an antidote that purifies defilements, like the cause and effect of the arising and the cause of arising, not the actual cause of the two bodies. That lineage produces perfect qualities, causing the realization of the path of learning to be liberated or matured in the Buddha-field. As stated in the Ornament of the Sutras: "Self-nature and growth, that is the dependent and the depended, existence and non-existence, and qualities, should be understood as the meaning of liberation." Thus it is. That Tathagatagarbha pervades all sentient beings. It is shown by nine similes to reside in the husk of afflictions, as stated in the Uttaratantra: "Buddha lotus, bad honey, bee, essence in chaff, gold in impurity, treasure in the ground, sprouts and fruits, Victor's body in tattered clothes, lord of men in the womb of a wicked woman, precious image in the ground, just as this element dwells in sentient beings obscured by sudden affliction stains." Thus it is. Those ordinary beings and Hearer-Solitary Realizer Arhats, and Bodhisattvas abiding on the paths of seeing and meditation, are spoken of in nine similes in relation to the realm of defilements. Among them, there are four metaphors for the indwelling essence of ordinary beings who have not entered the path, and those who have entered the path, obscured by the four defilements of the accumulation-application path. First, the metaphor of the indwelling essence in the husk of the characteristic of latent desire. As that treatise says: "Just as the Tathagata dwells in an unpleasant lotus, blazing with a thousand marks, the one with the immaculate divine eye sees and takes it out from the lotus petals. Likewise, in the abodes of the Sugata hells, the Buddha's eye sees its own nature, abiding without obstruction on the outer edge, the compassionate one liberates from defilement." Thus it is. Second, the metaphor of the element dwelling in the husk of the characteristic of latent anger. Just as honey surrounded by a multitude of beings, the wise man seeking that meaning, sees and skillfully separates the multitude of beings completely.
