because of arising. Even if one considers (external objects) to be mind, the material cause and material effect would become one, because without them, they would not arise; the enemy and one's own anger would also become one, because without the enemy, the anger caused by it would not arise. Furthermore, it is also unreasonable to say that it is mind because it is made by mind, as the image of a painting would also become the painter, because it is made by the painter. Therefore, how can one consider the external earth, stones, and cliffs to be mind? Let it be an illusion arising from the habits of the mind. If it were not so, then when a hundred people look at a single vase, the vase seen as round would become the knowledge of each of them, and all beings would become one knowledge. If one admits this, then when one person becomes a Buddha, all would become Buddhas; when one person falls into the lower realms, all would fall into the lower realms together. According to these views, there could only be one sentient being like you or me in the world, because all appearances are nothing other than one's own mind. Or there could only be one Buddha like Shakyamuni, because everything he sees is his knowledge." "If one admits this, then our sitting here becomes meaningful. It seems that there are very many people who hold such views nowadays, and they completely misunderstand the meaning of the Great Vehicle. "The body is large, covered by a lotus net, adorned with flower earrings, the golden mask shining brightly, completely like an elephant stretching its body." This is what is said. If one asks what these appearances are, even if it can be explained as admitted by the Mind-Only School of Immaculate Appearance, their treatises say: Although it is so, the things that appear to each are their own minds, but the objects of appearance are not mind. As the Many Sections of the Grounds of Yogic Practice says: "ཇི་ལྟར་སྣང་བ་སེམས་སྙེད་དེ།། སྣང་བའི་ཡུལ་ཉིད་དེ་ལྟ་མིན།། (Tibetan) How it appears is mind, but the object of appearance is not so. (Literal Chinese meaning)". (Tibetan) With habits from beginningless time, like tangled hair due to confusion. (Literal Chinese meaning)". It is like this, there is no distinction between appearance and the object of appearance. That is to say, from the mountain that is the object of appearance, the appearance of the mind that grasps with conceptual thought like others, thinking "it is a mountain," arises dependent on the eye sense. That is, the part of the place one goes to that one's own mind grasps is one's own appearance, and then when one goes to another place.

Although it does not follow the appearing object, it holds the habitual impressions that appeared to the senses of the eye consciousness. The general meaning, the object of the mind, does not exist, but the clear appearance clearly appears to the senses of the mind. Therefore, the appearance measured by the mind, and the one who holds it, and the appearance of others, and the one who holds it, all are mind, but even in the mind, the object of arising that is focused on is the establisher of the appearing object, and all the objects of the five senses, due to beginningless habitual impressions, appear as if they do not exist, like tangled hair falling. If that is the case, it becomes two, because the appearing object and the appearance are established as different. If you say so, then it also becomes two for you, because the mind of appearance is outside and the mind of grasping is desired inside. Both of them are one in mind, so even if it is said to be two, it is one in the same kind. If you say so, then here too, due to the cause of habitual confusion, the appearing object and the definite appearance that grasps it, appear as if they are non-existent, and in the aspect of habitual confusion, they are not different in name, but those two are non-existent in meaning, so they are established as the nature of non-duality. We Madhyamikas, if we examine, the object of the appearing object is not mind, and we do not consider appearance to be mind, because the inner mind is not outside, and the outer appearance arises in each sense organ, because it is examined inwardly with wisdom. If the appearance exists outside, then there will be a second person and consciousness existing at the same time, or one's own self will become material, and so on, there are many faults. Therefore, grasping appearance and non-appearance is mind, but appearance is not established as mind, just as hearing knows whether it is the sound of a drum, but hearing is not established as the sound of a drum. In short, one's own mind seems to emanate outward, but it does not emanate outward, and because the outer appearance appears inwardly. The outer appearance is definitely not the inner mind. If it exists, then because of the reason for appearing without existence, therefore, the various white, red, etc. that appear, are like a person with cataracts seeing hair falling. It appears without existing in any of the three, outer, inner, and intermediate, therefore it is without self-nature, or it is called emptiness of essence. Both being established as mind and being established as other than mind are not liberated from clinging to self-truth, therefore there is no difference. Because it is admitted that the object of the external world is not consciousness, it is a Sravaka Vaibhashika.
