Nor does it abandon. This is the secret of the Tathagata's mind, inconceivable! That is to say, whatever form, sound, etc., appears in the external environment, if it can be distinguished by the mind, it is called "discriminating consciousness." Or, because the mind arises similar to the appearance of the external environment, it is called "discriminating consciousness." When first recognizing an external object, the part of cognition that says "what is this" is called "mind." Discriminating its differences and thus producing a continuous connection is called "intellect." That is to say, when the consciousness that measures and distinguishes external appearances arises rapidly from each sense organ in an instant and deliberates, if it clings to happiness, it is greed; if it clings to suffering, it is hatred; if it is neither happiness nor suffering, but clings to "what is this," it is ignorance. For example, it is like seeing a beautiful woman one has known before, or seeing an enemy who has defeated oneself, or seeing walls, water, roads, trees, and ordinary people without joy or sorrow. As it is said in the Vinaya Pitaka: "If one sees what is pleasing, greed arises; if one does harm, hatred arises; in the middle ones, ignorance increases; you should guard the doors of the senses." Just like that. Second, the eight consciousnesses are declared to be the basis of confusion Now, let us explain in detail their basis of arising and classification, like this: Alaya consciousness, intellect, and the five sense consciousnesses, The order of arising is the order of arising. From this arises the suffering result of samsara. The root is ignorance, which has the confusion of subject-object duality. Because of the habitual tendencies cultivated in external objects, meanings, and consciousness, clinging to self and what belongs to self, samsara is formed. To classify this into parts, the consciousnesses that arise in each object, when they exist, the clear and non-discriminating cognition is called Alaya consciousness. After that, the consciousness that clings to this, distinguishing external objects through fine, coarse, etc., is intellect. As it is said in the Manjushri Wisdom Ornament Sutra: "Mind is Alaya consciousness, the one who clings to self is intellect." Just like that. The seeing nature of seeing form through the eyes is eye consciousness. Similarly, relying on the ears to hear sounds, relying on the nose to smell odors, relying on the tongue to taste flavors, relying on the body

From the aspect of touch to the consciousness of touch, these are the five types of consciousness. Because later consciousness arises from the earlier aspect, it is called the 'source of arising.' The objects and consciousness of these are immeasurable, so they are numerous and vast, and because they do not abandon their individual aspects, they are called 'realms.' Just as a mind with an object arises in dependence on the object, and just as the later arises in connection with the earlier, and because it becomes a subject and a nature, it is called 'dependent arising.' When an object and a mind with an object come together, one feels in ways such as happiness, and from the aspect of awareness, they come together, and feeling arises from the condition of touch. The distinctions of these and other aspects are immeasurable. In short, all actions that arise from the gathering of object, faculty, and attention, and are instigated by the three poisons, are unwholesome. Whatever arises in separation from the three poisons, such as patience, is great virtue. Virtues such as the ten virtues that are not grasped by the wisdom and compassion of the path are lesser virtues, because they are gathered by the seed of delusion, and after producing the fruit of happiness in samsara, they will be exhausted, so they are called virtues that are in accordance with merit. From the moment they are grasped by the path, they become the cause of enlightenment, so they are called virtues that are in accordance with liberation. The unwholesome actions instigated by the three poisons cause all the sufferings and miseries of the lower realms. Virtues in accordance with merit hold the glory of the happiness of gods and humans in higher realms, and virtues in accordance with liberation cause both temporary higher realms and ultimately certain goodness. As it is said in the Precious Garland: 'Desire, hatred, and ignorance, the actions produced by them are unwholesome. Non-attachment, non-hatred, and non-ignorance, the actions produced by them are virtuous.' 'From unwholesome actions come all sufferings, likewise all the lower realms. From virtuous actions come all the happy realms, and happiness in all lives.' So it is. Because external-seeming things, like dreams, are grasped as 'other,' habits are formed in the object, and various pure and impure appearances arise, becoming a place of delusion. The body, which arises from the elements, also becomes a habit in reality due to the cause of not understanding the thusness within. The aggregates, elements, and
