There are no sudden harmful intrusions, and even if it is said that life can be prolonged through harmonious food and the intake of nutrients, in the end it is of no benefit, and one will inevitably pass away. As it says in the Bodhisattvacaryāvatāra: 'Like this time of being without illness, even with food and without harm, this life is but a moment of deception, this body is like a fleeting illusion.' So it is said. There is not even a moment to spare. In the Jewel Garland of the Compendium of Trainings, Rābhyor said: 'The life of a person is like water flowing down a steep cliff.' And in the Vinaya Sutras it says: 'A river flowing down a steep cliff enters the ocean, the sun and moon head towards the western mountains, day and night pass swiftly in an instant, the passing of a person's life is similar to these.' So it is said. Thirteenth, showing the impermanence of conditions, place, and time: Furthermore, when the conditions for sustaining life, such as food, are complete, there are times when they cause suffering like poison. How can abundant prosperity not be destroyed by many unfavorable harms? Therefore, there is nothing that is not a cause of death. Where one will die, how one will die, when one will die, are all uncertain. Abandon the meaningless and deceptive worldly ways, and from the depths of your heart, practice the Dharma of impermanence and death. Like this, even food that is beneficial for survival can become a cause of illness, and although it may seem beneficial in the short term, it will ultimately cause harm. If one purges with laxatives, thinking it will be beneficial for illness, that itself can become an illness. What need is there to mention that direct unfavorable harms will interrupt life? There is nothing that is not a cause of death, so one should think only of death. That is, in the manner previously explained, there is no certainty as to where one will die, by what cause one will die, or at what time one will die. Because even today, there is no certainty that one will not die. As it says in the Bodhisattvacaryāvatāra: 'It is not right to sit comfortably, thinking that one will not die today. The time when I will cease to exist, that will inevitably be devoured by demons.' So it is said. The third general meaning, exhortation to diligence, has three points. First, exhortation to practice the Dharma when the lama and instructions are complete: Exhortation to liberate oneself from samsara at this excellent time of obtaining a fully endowed leisure and opportunity. Here, I have obtained the boat of leisure and opportunity, and I have the guru's instructions as the helmsman,

If you don't strive to cross the river of suffering, there is no greater deception than that. Since you have the boat of leisure and endowment, the lama, the excellent Dharma, the great path established by the Buddha Shakyamuni, and excellent boatmen, if you don't strive, you will only be deceiving yourself. In the Letter to a Friend, it says: 'Those who, having found the path of Dharma established by the Buddhas, which is like a great ship, abandon it again, for those who are like dancers swirling in the whirlpool of the ocean of samsara, I think it is certain that their minds are deceived.' Second, it is shown that without effort there is no liberation: Therefore, from the depths of your heart, urge yourself to be diligent. Since the precious vessel praised by the teacher, which can completely eliminate all faults, has been truly obtained, if you do not seize the opportunity to benefit yourself and others, you will only be binding yourself in the prison of samsara. When you have obtained such a precious leisure and endowment, if you do not practice the excellent Dharma that benefits yourself and others, you will ultimately be bound by the ropes of samsara. Therefore, encourage wise people to abandon samsara and rely on the excellent Dharma of liberation and practice diligently. As the Letter to a Friend says: 'Having obtained this human body, which can cross the ocean of birth and death, and can also sow the seeds of virtue for supreme enlightenment, this human body has more qualities than a wish-fulfilling jewel, who would make it meaningless?' Having relied on the path of the Sugatas, you are ready to guide beings, and the Dharma obtained by those with great mental strength, which cannot be obtained by gods, nagas, asuras, garudas, vidyadharas, kinnaras, or reptiles. Having obtained the extremely rare Dharma with a human body, if you can regard it as precious, you should practice diligently. So it is said. Third, even if you are well advised, you do not listen, and a strong compassion arises for this: Now, even if you say so, those beings who are not touched in their hearts, out of compassion for them, wish for themselves to attain peace, and wish to be able to guide them someday, and a strong compassion arises in their hearts. Alas! Just like preaching to a stone, when I think of most people in the world, sadness arises spontaneously. The teachings cannot penetrate, the explanations cannot be understood, and even if they die tomorrow, they still cling to permanent things. They are not disgusted with samsara, and there is not the slightest renunciation. Know
