Therefore, conditioned phenomena are subject to destruction. Like an old city, due to impermanence. Quickly accumulate the treasure of the sacred Dharma! Thus exhorted. Formerly, a prosperous city, filled with people and many inhabitants, later became empty, at that time one should contemplate thus: Alas! The phenomena of samsara, those that were previously flourishing and prosperous, eventually come to an end. People are merely left with their names. For example, just as this, my body, is a dwelling composed of the four elements, adorned with the wealth of clothes and ornaments, inhabited by beings who scatter various thoughts, this too will decay and separate. Only a remnant of bones will remain. Some people will refer to me by my name, saying, 'That is his bone,' one should contemplate this from the depths of one's heart. In the "Letter to a Friend" it says: The body eventually dries up like ashes, eventually rots, eventually is unclean, without essence, completely decaying, rotting, dispersing separately, know that it is of the nature of dispersing. Thus it is said. Eighth, impermanence by example: When one has enjoyed the bliss of the heavens for a long time, just as one awakens from a dream, one instantly turns towards death. Just as a red wind enters a lamp. Momentary impermanence, the nature of wavering, when suddenly confronted by violent causes of death. One cannot remain for long, one will certainly die, therefore, accumulate the treasure of the sacred Dharma right now! Just as a lamp remains in a calm breeze, when a very strong wind arises, it is like the lamp being extinguished. When one's own self is wavering like a lamp, being moved by the gentle breeze of day and night, growing old and dying quickly, without even time, one will surely be robbed by the causes of disease or harm like a strong wind, one must contemplate this. In the letter sent to the disciple it says: Just as the flame of a lamp is moved by a strong wind, there is no certainty that this life will last even for a moment. Thus it is said. Ninth, impermanence by abandoning everything: Furthermore, because one must abandon everything and depart, one must also contemplate impermanence. Retinue and possessions, close relatives and friends. Form and youth, power and noble lineage. Everything must be abandoned, one must depart alone, one cannot prevent it with anything, good and bad karma.

Following after. At that time, if there is no other refuge than the Dharma, why not strive to practice diligently now? At the time of death, none of the appearances of this life can bring benefit and one must depart. The two, good and bad karma, will follow after, and only the Dharma is said to be the refuge. As it says in the Sutra of Advice to the King: When the king is urged by time to depart, wealth, friends, and relatives will not follow. Wherever the king dwells, wherever he goes, karma follows like a shadow. And in the Sutra Requested by Glorious Giving it says: Through mixed karma, one seeks enjoyment, and nourishes sons and wives. At the time of death, when one is in great suffering, sons and wives cannot become a refuge. Just as one has done and taken various kinds of karma, sons and wives will also be abandoned. One will come to experience suffering alone. At that time, they will not take my share. Parents, siblings, sons and wives, servants, wealth, and all possessions, after death, these do not go. Karma follows and the child goes. So it is said. At that time, for those who have accumulated great amounts of non-virtuous karma, there will appear the sights of those past killings, and the messengers of Yama circling around and leading them with lassos. As it says in the Bodhisattvacharyavatara: Dry mouth, sunken eyes, and so forth, from the appearance of changing from before, the messengers of Yama, with fearful faces, are seized by those with fleshly forms. Struck by great disease, what need is there to say of being utterly exhausted? Who will save me well from this great fear? With eyes wide open in terror, one seeks refuge in the four directions. Having seen that there is no refuge in the four directions, one then becomes utterly despondent. So it is said. At that time, even remembering the Dharma is too late, and those who have transgressed the law are like seeking refuge when they have fallen into the hands of the executioner. Therefore, one must remember from now on. As it says in that very text: At that time, even if one abandons laziness, what is there to do when it is not the time? When the Lord of Death suddenly comes, one will think, "Alas, I am destroyed!" So it is said. Also, the Three Jewels and virtuous Dharma are the refuge. As it says in the Sutra Requested by Immaculate Giving: Other than these who possess qualities, even parents cannot be her
