The breath will cease. They will say, "Let's divide the wealth." They will say, "Dear father, dear mother, dear son." The hair will fall out. When only generosity, asceticism, and Dharma become friends, there will be no other refuge than Dharma. There will be no other protector. There will be no other ally. Great King, at that time, at that moment, Dharma will become an island, a dwelling, a protector, and a teacher. Great King, at such a time, while lying in one's own bed, experiencing the visions of the afterlife and going to the lower realms, a fearful vision of that place will arise. At that time, nothing other than Dharma will become a refuge. Great King, this body that you have so completely protected, that has been so well nurtured, will also come to the moment of death. Even this body, endowed with all qualities, nourished for a long time with many pure things such as food and drink, will be abandoned by doctors when lying on its final bed, reviled and abandoned by all, and will meet the moment of death in discomfort. Great King, in this way, your body is washed and anointed, fumigated with incense, and adorned with fragrant flowers, but inevitably it will emit an unpleasant odor. Great King, in this way, even though you are covered with fine clothes such as Kashi silk and brocade, at the time of lying on your final bed, you will meet the moment of death wearing dirty clothes, and you will go alone and naked. Great King, even though you are delighted by various desirable qualities, you must abandon all of them and meet the moment of death without having been satisfied by desire. Great King, in this way, you are rich in your home with incense, flowers, silk curtains, cushions, and various kinds of clothes, and you lie on a bed with pillows on the left and right, but inevitably you will be abandoned in a great charnel ground filled with crows, foxes, and disgusting corpses, and your body will lie motionless on the ground. Great King, in this way, you ride on the backs of elephants and horses, and you are delighted by the sweet and pleasing sounds of various musical instruments, and you raise banners and umbrellas, and you are praised by kings, ministers, and friends.

Walking with head held high and looking forward, one will soon lie in bed and die. Four people will carry the body, and parents and siblings will raise their hands, beat their chests, and be overwhelmed with grief. They will carry the body out of the city's south gate and bury it in the wilderness, or it will be eaten by crows, vultures, foxes, and so on. Those bones will be burned, thrown into water, or buried in the ground. The wind, sun, and rain will grind them into powder, scattering them in all directions, and they will decay. Great King, just as it is widely proclaimed that all conditioned phenomena are impermanent and unstable, remember this from the depths of your heart. Knowing that no appearance of this life will last forever, strive day and night to practice only the sacred Dharma. Second, even obtaining Brahma and other states is impermanent. Furthermore, just like this, the three realms are complete, becoming the basis for excellence. Brahma, the source of bliss, the thousand-eyed Indra, and others, fame and merit, blazing with splendor, cannot overcome the Lord of Death. Even those who abide for eons through the accomplishment of meditation will face death when their karma is exhausted. Gods and asuras, accomplished ones, holders of vidyā-mantras, human rulers, and countless ordinary beings, all fear death, with endless births and parents. Just like this, Brahma, the Great Lord, Vishnu, Indra, and the four Great Kings who protect the world, fill the world with great light, surpassing a thousand suns. Their splendor is greater than the slopes of a golden mountain, and the fame of their merit pervades heaven and earth. They are the lords of the three realms—below the earth, on the earth, and above the earth—and although adorned with excellent wealth, they still face death. In the Vinaya Sutra, it says: "Monks, look at these declining and meaningless riches! In my past lives, which I remember, I experienced countless powers of Brahma, Indra, and the protectors of the world, but before I was satisfied, I passed away and fell into the lower realms." Brahma and Indra, the powerful thousand-eyed one, even if they have abandoned craving, will impermanently go to the next life. The sun and moon are only enjoyed for a moment; look at how the vast earth and the world of the four continents will be destroyed. Think!
