Do not covet the guru's possessions, and restrain all thoughts of harm and hatred. Do not mistakenly judge the guru's various actions and miracles with duplicity, thinking, "This is just their own ethnic custom." Abandon subtle contradictions, faults, and wrong views. Even if the guru appears to be displeased, reflect on your own faults, confess, and restrain yourself. Meditate on the guru at the crown of your head and pray intensely, so that you will please him and quickly attain accomplishments. When you see the guru, rise and prostrate, and when he is seated, offer cushions and other necessary items. Praise him with sweet words and join your palms. When he departs, rise and attend to him, serving him with reverence. Always be mindful, aware, and cautious, and abide with respect and fear. Like a new bride, dwell in the presence of the guru with body, speech, and mind subdued. Do not be frivolous, distracted, or arrogant. Be without sectarian bias, not for profit or fame, not with deceit or pretense, not with favoritism or aversion, not with hidden agendas. If you have wealth, make offerings to the guru. Please him with service, reverence, and devotion of body, speech, and mind, and by abandoning this life through practice. If others speak ill of the guru, refute them, and if you cannot, then recall his virtues again. Cover your ears and help them with compassion. Do not speak presumptuously without relying on him. In this way, you will accomplish benefit in all lifetimes, meet with holy beings, and hear the supreme Dharma. You will be filled with various qualities and wealth, such as the grounds, paths, dharanis, and samadhis, and you will bestow a feast of peace and happiness upon beings. Therefore, by relying well on holy beings, you will also abandon evil spiritual friends. That is, those who do not possess the qualities mentioned earlier, have many faults of wrong views, violate vows and commitments, have little love, compassion, wisdom, and learning, are lazy and negligent, do not know humility, are arrogant, are narrow-minded, cruel, and have coarse afflictions and five poisons. They seek only the benefit of this life and cast the next life far away. They appear to teach the Dharma, but are actually imposters. A guru who is like a pile of impure filth should be avoided from afar, even if there are many bees to be tamed. Because he leads faithful people onto wrong paths and into the lower realms, those who desire liberation should never rely on him. Such evil friends should be abandoned, for the more you associate with them, the more your sins increase.

Virtue diminishes and afflictions fall like rain, Blocking the path to happiness and becoming a platform for bad destinies, Reviling the holy and hating the white Dharma, Praising the wicked and relying on the black Dharma. Praising those who engage in equally unwholesome deeds, Constantly leading astray to evil paths and bad destinies, Those with the eye of wisdom should keep far away. By abandoning sinful friends and companions, One achieves happiness and excellent qualities in this life and the next. Constantly increasing virtue and attaining the profound path of liberation, Never seeing evil people, The protector surrounded by the sons of the Sugata, May he consider me and grant his blessings.
