Without engaging the grasping efforts of the mind and the antidote of deliberate meditation, awareness is left vast and free, placed in a state of unobstructed, naturally clear expanse. As it says in The Jeweled Array: "Vast, the nature of reality is completely pure! Great, the view is exceedingly wondrous! Manifest, the self-appearing mandala itself! Realm and non-realm are completely pure! Outer and inner are without, completely manifest! Empty and not empty, beyond words!" And as it says in The Lion's Perfected Strength: "Wherever the first place is, the last goes to that place, now it abides in that meaning." Again: "In the sky without grasping thoughts, in the sky without consciousness, when consciousness is not moved by the mind, it is the supreme samadhi without distraction, the solitary Buddha's forest practice." The second has three aspects: Self-abiding stillness is: without fabricating any grasping at the appearances of the assembled objects, one leaves it utterly clear, unobstructed, inside and out. Even when going to sleep, one falls asleep in that state, so that dreams dawn as clear light. Great avalanche is: one loosens the three doors completely, and whatever arises, one allows it to strike directly, recognizing the state of having gone completely into natural clarity. Increasing appearances is: one sits in the lotus posture, gazes fixedly into the space between, cuts off mental wandering, and recognizes the state of awareness and half-clarity. Thus, the five winds bind into space, and the self-appearing pure light dawns: outwardly, like smoke, mirages, rainbows, and lights; and inwardly, like the pure clarity of the nature of reality. As it says in The Sixth Expanse: "Thus, train in the three samadhis. The self-abiding stillness samadhi is: one does not block the doors of the senses, one does not engage in physical activity, one does not abandon sleep, the mind does not separate itself. In short, body and speech remain in their own state, the mind-born aspects do not scatter outward, and even toward the objects of the six senses, one acts with mindfulness, the mind is not moved. In the great self-appearing non-conceptuality, the experience of clarity and non-conceptuality arises. The great avalanche samadhi is: the body is like an ordinary person, speech is free from words and expression, the mind is not bound tightly, self-arising, not distracted by itself. The increasing appearances samadhi is: with body, objects, and awareness, one holds the measures of self-appearing purity." The third is cultivating intention beyond the mind, which has four aspects: the view of mountain-king stillness.

The View of Stillness Like the Ocean, the Instructions of Awareness Stillness, and the Means of Appearance Stillness. First: Having recognized this self-illuminating awareness, whatever arises, maintain a state of unwavering stability like the king of mountains. As it is said in the Unwritten Teachings: Mountain Stillness is the secret view. There is no doubt, and change naturally ceases. So it is said. Second: The body in the lotus posture, eyes gazing slightly open into space, knowledge and clarity like an ocean undisturbed by waves, remaining in this clear state. As it is said: The view of stillness like the ocean is, not appearance, but the cause of appearance. Not emptiness, yet not existing in emptiness. Not clarity, but the realm of great clarity. Not sinking, naturally without agitation. Unmoved, unmoving, not changing into movement. Unshifting, unmoving, transcending all movement. Not arising from effort, behold the great method of stillness. Do not engage in gathering or scattering, in the state of one stillness. Not abiding, yet there is no passing beyond it. In the ocean of secret wisdom, naturally abundant from the beginning, rest in the unmoved expanse. From the great ocean, difficult to fathom, behold the crest of the victory banner, without sinking. Without the mind of emptiness, the great unconditioned body. Without effort, victorious over all actions. From the beginning, unborn, the unconditioned stillness itself. Appearance not transformed, mind not fabricated. If the nature of reality abides in space, the view is shown. The wisdom of the Dharmakaya, having completely abandoned thought, if there is no movement, it is the view of meditation. If you do not grasp at the objects of appearance and the directions of focus, like stars appearing in the depths of the ocean. Without grasping at objects, the clarity of light unceasing, this is the way of abiding in natural view. So it is said. Third: The wisdom of awareness, clear and empty, appearing nakedly, recognizing this awareness as nakedly self-illuminating, cutting through the pitfalls of clinging to meditative absorption, the transparent, naked Dharmakaya arises from within. As the lion perfects its strength, looking outward at the realms of various self-awarenesses, the great, non-conceptual Dharmakaya is found within. So it is said. Fourth: When looking at the appearance of the five external objects, maintaining the state in which the inner self-illuminating nakedness arises clearly from within. As it is said: Awareness, clear, the nature of reality, looking outward at objects, the awareness free from variety is seen within. So it is said. And as it is said in the Unwritten Teachings: Appearance, staring.
