The Supreme Jewel Treasury of Thegpa. The second volume. The second volume of Thegchok Dzö. Having thus explained the distinctions of the ground of all and the Dharmakaya, etc., now there are two explanations of the nature of dependent arising: the common distinctions and the detailed explanation of the individual natures. The first is that there are two kinds of arising: outer arising and inner arising. As it says in Rangshar: Arising is shown to be of two kinds: outer arising and inner arising. Thus. These outer arisings, such as earth and water, abide as the support of inner arising, and because they are related as support and supported, it is certain that there are two arisings. There are no sentient beings or Buddhas who do not rely on these two. Sentient beings practice in the realm of the five confused elements and possess the nature of the five great elements. The Buddhas abide in the realm of the five pure elements of true meaning, such as the absence of solid earth, and practice the complete exhaustion of the impurities of the five great elements. The five great elements are the five-colored clear light wisdom, and the five small elements are earth, water, fire, wind, and space. The five pure elements are: clarity, warmth, lightness, coolness, vastness, and the holding of the nature of movement. When the five confused elements are purified, the five clear lights enter the expanse and meet the inner realm, like the pure great elements of spontaneous manifestation. The small elements also have the form of elements and the actual elements. The form of elements is the five elements of earth, water, fire, wind, and space that appear outwardly now. The actual elements are the five subtle qualities of the body, etc., which are the five that become the support of the inner elements. The inner elements are the support of the pure realm, the five elements of Dharma are distinct. Therefore, all of samsara and nirvana do not move from the realm of the five elements, and before there were five elements, there was no arising of samsara and nirvana. As it says in Rangshar: Kyeho! Listen, secret lord, the characteristics of the five elements, I have shown, may you understand. The five great elements, Bhagavan, abide naturally in all beings. All sentient beings of the three realms practice in the realm of the five elements. Before there were five elements, there was not even the name of Buddha or sentient being. The five elements are the mother realm, and there are no living beings or sentient beings that are not made of the five elements.

There is not even one. The sentient beings dwelling therein, Manifest two kinds of arising. Thus it is said. Secondly, to explain the individual nature in detail, there are two: the detailed explanation of external arising and the detailed explanation of internal arising. The first has ten aspects: essence, etymology, purpose, characteristics, function, nature, meaning connection, mode of liberation, division, and completeness. First, the essence is: External arising appears as form, it is the play of internal arising of objects. Since it is included in the internal, there are five elements. In Rangshar it says: The external elements are as follows: Earth, water, fire, and, Likewise, wind and space. Thus, the five external forms become the basis for the appearance of the vessel of sentient beings, while the five internal objects become the basis for mind and intelligence. In Thalgyur it says: The desire for arising is as follows: From the distinction of common karma, The basis of sentient beings' karma, Relying on the external elements, They desire to perfect actions, nourishment, senses, Retinue, and birth. Thus it is said. Second, the etymology is: In Rangshar it says: The etymology of arising is as follows: Not made, but spontaneously accomplished. Because it causes to arise, it is arising. Because it pervades all beings, it is great arising. Because it arises simultaneously, it is great arising. Because it exists in itself, it is great arising. Because it is unchanging, it is great arising. Because it appears harmoniously, it is great arising. The etymology of great arising is just like that. Thus it is said. Third, the purpose is: In Thalgyur it says: The doubt about arising is as follows: Water gathers the essence, And separates the impurities. Because it acts on each body, Therefore, know the necessity of heat and cold. Earth holds the foundation, And performs the actions of forming and establishing. Ripening produces veins and so on. Know the necessity of conventional bindu. Fire propagates arising, And performs the actions of ripening and clarifying. Blazing and spreading produces eyes and so on. Know the necessity of warmth. Wind scatters and lifts, And performs the actions of moving and agitating. Moving and twitching holds the body, Know the necessity of the mind's dwelling. The four elements are the great mandala of self, Having made the cause of accomplishing body and so on, Dwelling and holding in the middle, Finally, it disintegrates.
