Self-born liberation in its own place, entering the source of mind, arises from the complete empowerment of primordial non-elaboration. Like a person whose mental plague is cleansed, never to recur, it arises from grasping the wind of the mind's complete purity. Great Perfection, primordial liberation, never to recur, entering the place of mind, is utterly without elaboration, self-appearing, self-liberating. The mind, like an arrow piercing the heart of a man, immediately dying, arises from the transformation of extraordinary habituation. The measure of Great Perfection, instantaneous swiftness, the mind entering the life force, is that all elaborations are completely pacified and nonexistent, hence it is empowerment. This also generates faith through examples, and decisively settles the meaning. That is, the basis of the body arises as the liberator from the bonds of the four elements, so now it is impossible for the elements to revert to their own nature. The four of speech are liberation from the bonds of the basis of expression, the cause of expression, the object of expression, and the expresser, so now it is impossible for speech to autonomously utter words. The four of mind are liberation from the bonds of memory, non-memory, non-arising, and transcendence of intellect, so now it is impossible for memory and thought to enter the wheel of objects. Thus, signs appearing on the body, recognition in speech, confidence arising in the mind, and the measure being grasped by dreams, are the stages of diligence. For the superior, dreams are completely cut off, arising from great habituation, so karma and habitual tendencies have no benefit or harm. For the middling, knowing in dreams that it is a dream arises from the certainty of habituation, so there is no discrimination of good or bad habitual tendencies. For the inferior, dreams transform into abiding in goodness, as habitual tendencies are purified into one taste, so one must be cautious of the activities of acceptance and rejection, closeness and distance, and cause and effect. Thus, the three abidings are as stated in the "String of Pearls": The pure realm is abiding, likewise the essence of awareness abides, all appearances abide. So it is. Third, nailing down the three attainments: by gaining mastery over external appearances, the conditions of appearance are liberated into the pure realms. By gaining mastery over the inner illusory body, one is liberated into the luminous clarity with form. By gaining mastery over the secret awareness, the confusion of wind and mind is exhausted, called approaching the attainment of the fruit of meaning. Also, in that very text it says: When awareness arises, causes and conditions cease. When luminosity arises, coarse and subtle cease. When the realm of awareness arises, object and mind cease. So it is.

So. Fourth, grasping the measure of liberation with the four confidences is: even seeing or hearing the suffering of hot and cold hells, there is confidence without surprise or shame; even hearing the qualities of the Buddha, there is no hope or desire to attain them, but confidence in abiding in the self-established completion of the three kayas; even hearing the cause and effect of karma and afflictions, there is no fear of falling into illusory samsara, therefore there is confidence in the repetition of cause and effect; even seeing the self-nature of nirvana, there is no joy of longing for liberation, therefore there is confidence in seizing the stronghold of original purity, self-completion. These four confidences arise. As it is said in the Tantra of the Heap of Jewels: "With the four great confidences of unchanging view, one also grasps the measure of irreversible wisdom." Thus, in the wake of the four ultimate supports, concluding with the sixteen appearances is: appearance, increase, attainment, and near attainment, each group of four entering into the four appearances, thereby perfecting the appearances of the sixteen bhumis. The appearance of the manifestation of dharmata, the increase is the eye; the near increase is the suchness of the eye; the attainment is seeing the continuous line; the near attainment is gaining familiarity with it. The appearance of the increase of experience, the increase is light; the near increase is bindu; the attainment is the bindu appearing as five colors; the near attainment is the emanation of various rays from shaking and flickering. The appearance of reaching the limit, the increase is the body; the near increase is appearing as father and mother; the attainment is having groups of five fives; the near attainment is the mandala being complete. The appearance of exhaustion, the increase is not abiding in body and wisdom; the near increase is emptiness without support; the attainment is inexpressible; the near attainment is the illusory dharmata not being established anywhere, these sixteen. Thus, the person who definitely realizes the sixteen appearances, the time for their own continuum to ripen into wisdom has come, therefore, the definite sixteen appearances are called the Protector Vajradhara. Similarly, the sixteen stages established in the positions of cause and effect are complete here in both the liberation into the light body and the liberation in the bardo. As it is said in Self-Arisen Wisdom: "The ground called other is not there, in one who sees the truth, all the grounds are complete and present. That is, the person who shows recognition, at the time of first seeing the truth, the joy that arises in them is the first Extremely Joyful Ground. At that time, recognizing that it is their own appearance is obtaining the second Stainless Ground."
