In the Great Commentary of Ra, the Precious Golden Garland, it is said that subsequent recollection arises due to the power of previous special karma, and these appear before those direct perceptions. The definitive scriptural authority on recollection is: In the Conjunction of Sun and Moon Sutra, it says that at that time six recollections will also arise: by recollecting the deity, one will immediately see the face of the yidam deity; by recollecting the paths, one will gain control over the dharmata of the bardo; by recollecting the place of birth, one will breathe the last sense faculties in the pure land of the nirmāṇakāya; by recollecting the meditations, one will remain in meditation for five days; by recollecting the guru's instructions, one will practice inseparably from one's own appearances; by recollecting the view, it is like recognizing someone one knew before just by meeting them later. Third, there are six ways in which direct perception arises: direct perception of the senses, direct perception of the mind's ability, direct perception of mastering wisdom, direct perception of seeing the purity of wisdom, direct perception of seeing the dharmata as it is, and direct perception of seeing the Buddha's wisdom as it is. If divided by parts, each one is divided into six, making a total of thirty-six. First, the first of the six sense direct perceptions is the arising of eye consciousness direct perception: from eyes as pure as water bubbles, one sees things completely through without half-closing the eyes; with pure flesh eyes, one sees hidden coarse objects, and can see all things within five yojanas; with completely pure flesh eyes, one sees the four continents together with Mount Meru as one; with very pure eyes, one sees two or three; with extremely pure eyes, one sees up to a hundred thousand things; with the most extremely pure eyes, one sees billions and countless things as they are. Then, with the eye of wisdom, one sees a hundred nirmāṇakāya realms at once; with purity, one sees eight hundred thousand nirmāṇakāya realms; with very pure eyes, one sees a hundred thousand nirmāṇakāya realms; with extremely pure eyes, one sees ninety million; with the most extremely pure eyes, one sees ninety-one. Then, with the all-knowing eye, one sees a hundred sambhogakāya realms at once.
