Not eaten by ghosts. Black spots appear on the tongue. Within two days, that too will die. If the ears stick to the head, that is midnight tonight. If the nipples of the chest shrink, it will be eaten by ghosts in half a month. If there is no pulse when falling asleep, that is also half a month. So it is said. Third, the method of averting is shown, which is to accumulate merit in special fields, to make the wheel of interdependent origination of the five elements, and to deceive ghosts with ransom, and it is said that these three can even avert the exhaustion of life. As it says in that very text: If such signs appear on the body, the ritual of averting death is explained. By initiating the work of averting the man, please one's own guru and sangha, and the special field for accumulating merit, with offerings and feasts. These rituals should be performed. In order to equalize the sounds of the elements, on the leaves of the Tala tree, make the wheel of the five elements, including the four corners, the center, and the circumference. Make five wheels of earth, water, fire, wind, and space, and distinguish the colors by the elements. On the center and the five corners, write the five letters of each. The circumference is surrounded by a collection of vowels Having drawn the wheels in this way, make offerings, praises, and confessions. Pray for whatever each one desires. In the center, visualize the deities of the elements, recite the number of letters and merge them. Then, put all those wheels into two bowls placed together, and tie them in a cross with five colored threads. Mix wood, water, fire, and earth, and vapors of different kinds, all together in tsampa, and knead them into a shape one cubit long. On the five senses, write letters on Tibetan paper, cut holes and insert them. This restores the weakened elements. If one is seized by a ghost, knead tsampa into as many shapes as the man's age, changing the color. Mix one's own scent, pieces of clothing, and also the substances of the elements, with the tsampa, and knead them into shapes. Decorate those shapes with wool, dye, silk, and feathers. Also make tormas similar to those shapes. Finally, surround that effigy with tsampa equal to the yogi's age. Bless it and say these words: Take it, take it, powerful ones. May craving, attachment, infatuation, and also memory, grasping, thought, and touch, be released, pacified, and liberated. These words are

Recite all three times. Then send it to the riverbank. To avert from death, there is no doubt about Naraka (Tibetan: ན་རག་ཀན). Thus it is. Fourth, showing the signs of death: When the elements dissolve into their respective elements, there will be various signs of disturbance of the channels and winds. The sign of earth dissolving into earth is that the body is heavy and unable to stand. The sign of water dissolving into water is that liquid flows out of the mouth and nose, and then dries up. The sign of fire dissolving into fire is that heat is lost from the four limbs of the body, and radiance and luster disappear. The sign of wind dissolving into wind is that breathing becomes difficult and the body loses strength. As it says in the "Union of Sun and Moon Sutra": Earth dissolves into earth, likewise water, fire, and wind, each dissolves into itself, these will happen in the body of a person. When earth dissolves into itself, the body is heavy and unable to eat, and all strength to stand and walk is exhausted. When water dissolves into water, liquid will drip from the mouth and nose. Likewise, when fire dissolves into fire, the mouth and nose will become very dry, and all the heat from the ends of the body will disappear. Likewise, when wind dissolves into wind, breathing becomes rapid, limbs tremble, and the eyes will also roll upwards. Thus it is. Fifth, there are three instructions for guidance: The best is to abide in the Dharmadhatu, awareness self-liberated; the intermediate is to practice transference of consciousness; the lowest is to rely on other conditions. The first is: When yogis die alone, if there is no separation from the appearance of clear light, then at that time they do not rely on others, because the self-appearing light is clear, so they abide in this without distraction. The body remains in any of the three postures, either in the lotus position or in the lion's posture, focusing awareness on the Dharmadhatu awareness, if they die like this, in that instant they can be completely liberated upwards, without the bardo of Dharmata. Again, that same sutra says: At that time, if the fortunate practitioner has self-appearing light, without lingering, awareness is self-liberated. It also says: The corpse is in the lion's posture, awareness is focused on the eyes, the mind only walks in the sky, if the Dharmadhatu and awareness do not change, then this person has no bardo, there is no doubt about becoming a Buddha, and the breath of death will also become slow. For those who are accustomed to the Dharmadhatu awareness, it is very important to die in a snow mountain, a cave, or a place without distractions when dying. Shantideva also said: Beside them, no matter who, there is no sorrow.
