It will mature into being dominated by others, and so on. Those who have accumulated good deeds in their previous lives will have clear senses and beautiful appearances, pleasing to the eye, possessing retinues and enjoyments, and constantly experiencing freedom and wealth, and so on. Where one is born in the next life also depends on whether one's thoughts and actions in the present are virtuous or non-virtuous. Those who accumulate merit and practice generosity and discipline will be born in the happy realms of the heavens, and their retinues and wealth will increase. Those who abide in patience and tranquility will have beautiful appearances. By being a friend and protector to others, one will be born in a central region. One will be born in a place where one is respected by all and unharmed by others. In the past, by respecting the lama and practicing the Dharma, in this life one will meet a true lama, a virtuous spiritual friend, and practice the Dharma, and one will be born in a good place, endowed with all that one desires. In the past, by respecting the Three Jewels and making offerings, in this life one will also be well ordained, fully ordained, and reach the end of a life of pure conduct, practicing the Dharma of the supreme vehicle. Those who have trained in listening, contemplation, and meditation in the past will also have great wisdom in this life, and through listening, contemplation, and meditation on the immeasurable gates of the Dharma, they will spontaneously accomplish both their own and others' benefit. And so on, the qualities are immeasurable. Those who have committed sins and non-virtuous deeds in the past will be born in various lower realms in this life. Even if they attain a higher realm, they will be poor and have little merit due to incomplete senses, and so on. By practicing non-virtue in this life, one will also be born in a realm full of suffering in the next life. In short, what one has done in previous lives can be known from the happiness and suffering and the state of body and mind in this life. Where one will be born in the next life depends on one's thoughts and actions in the present. As it is said in the Sutra of the Arrayed Tree: "Look at the body of this life to see what you did in the past. Look at the mind of this life to see where you will go in the future." Having thought in this way, one should abandon non-virtue and practice virtue in this life, and always keep one's mind on the sacred Dharma, because nothing other than the Dharma can bring benefit. As it is said in the Sutra Requested by the Daughter Jewel: "In this world, father and mother and friends, relatives and kinsmen are not a refuge, sons and daughters are likewise not a protector, except for those who possess qualities, there is no refuge in the world."

There is no other refuge, so it is said. In the Sutra of Advice to the King, it says: If the king is about to depart in times of danger, wealth, friends, and relatives will not follow. Wherever beings go from wherever they come, karma follows like a shadow. So it is said. Second, by contemplating the reasons for certain destruction, constantly generate renunciation and sorrow: Although it is difficult to obtain leisure, it is still a collection of the four elements, so it is certain to be destroyed because it is conditioned. Like a collection of bubbles, it is impossible to know when it will be destroyed. Therefore, on this basis that has not yet been destroyed, I will practice the sacred Dharma of liberation. Like a dream illusion, what is the use of this life's appearance? You should think from the bottom of your heart. In the Precious Stack Sutra, it says: In the gross forms of the elements, there is no place to stay, how wonderful! In the life of a steadfast person, there is no fixed time, how wonderful! In the appearance of the six aggregates, there is no permanence, how wonderful! In the thoughts and feelings of a person, there is no end, how wonderful! In the suffering arising from the body, there is no purity, how wonderful! So it is said. Although it is impermanent, clinging to permanence and truth, all beings who are attached to the appearance of this life are mistaken. I must not be like that. I should think from the bottom of my heart. Have I benefited others? Have I defeated enemies? Have I occupied land? No matter what I have done, all of them are meaningless and deceptive. Therefore, I should look inward at my own mind. As the glorious Marme Dze Yeshe said: Alas! When looking at the actions of the world, all actions are the cause of meaningless suffering. No matter what you think about, there is no benefit. Get used to looking at your own mind. You should think like this. Third, by contemplating the examples of certain death, teach the profound meaning of emptiness when needed: In general, the examples of the impermanence of conditioned phenomena are the same as dreams, illusions, etc. In the Collection of Special Expressions, it says: Alas! All conditioned phenomena are impermanent, they are of the nature of arising and ceasing. Having arisen and then ceasing, it is better to quickly cease and be happy. Stars, lamps, illusions, dewdrops, and bubbles are also like this. Dreams, lightning, and clouds, all conditioned phenomena are also like this.
