Although one accepts the bardo of the path, the bardo of dharmata, and the bardo of existence, etc., in this unique secret king vehicle, it is held that there are four: the bardo of intrinsic nature, the bardo of dying, the bardo of dharmata, and the bardo of existence. As it says in the Uttaratantra: "Such is the dharmata of the bardo, the dharmata that is most secret, if divided, there are four aspects." Fourth, regarding the manner of appearance, there are two aspects. First, the general presentation: What appears to the general category of the three realms is that grasping and fixation, attachment and aversion, and afflictions are considered to be manifest, and subtle forms and formlessness. What appears to each of the six realms is that for the same water, gods see it as nectar, etc. As it says in the Two Truths: "One object, minds are different, therefore, the meaning is seen as unaccomplished." Etc. For the category of individuals, for one person, Lha Jin, sometimes he appears as an enemy, sometimes as a friend; and happiness and suffering, delusion and non-delusion, attachment and aversion, good and bad, having dharma and not having dharma, etc., there are many ways of appearing. In short, whatever appears to whomever, it appears like the various good and bad dreams of last night. Although it appears, it is not established, so it is engaging in clear appearance of non-existence. Second, the specific explanation, there are four: The appearance of the bardo of abiding in intrinsic nature is that, bound by the five aggregates such as form, the appearance of the five kayas ceases on its own; bound by the elements and sense bases, the appearance of light and color ceases on its own; bound by karma and afflictions, the appearance of wisdom and dharmata ceases on its own. Because of the mind's attachment to the objects of external appearance, one engages day and night in the midst of the difficult-to-cross river of the four inversions, thus engaging in various karmas and habitual tendencies. The four inversions are that, not knowing the nature of samsara's illusory appearance, like a dream, like an illusion, one grasps impermanence as permanence, grasps untruth as truth, grasps suffering as happiness, and grasps emptiness as entity and sign. As an antidote to these, the Bhagavan spoke the four seals of dharma in order to guide individual childish beings. The appearance of the bardo of dying is that, the elements of the body are disturbed, therefore one experiences the suffering of the external body; the path of mental feeling is lost, therefore one experiences the suffering of the internal mind.

Experiencing suffering. Due to the collapse of the ocean of clinging to habitual patterns, even though attached to the appearances of this life, one experiences the suffering of separation. Remembering the self-harming non-dharmic actions, one experiences the suffering of fearing falling into the abyss of the lower realms in the future. Remembering the body that was nourished with clinging and cherishing, one experiences the suffering of fearing the collapse of the fortress of the aggregates as a support. In reality, if matter and awareness separate, one dwells in the suffering of fearing death. The appearances of the Dharmata Bardo are: Having abandoned the support of clinging to the aggregates as self, the Dharmata of body and wisdom manifests. Since the connection of karma and habitual patterns is severed, one enjoys the Dharmata of self-existing meditation. Since the objects of the sense faculties are emptied, one experiences the Dharmata of self-appearing clear light. The appearances of the Existence Bardo are: The existence of the outer body, as a mind-made body with complete faculties, travels unimpeded. The existence of the inner mind contemplates and engages in various thoughts. The existence of the union of body and mind travels unimpeded to everything except the two supports, and feels cold. The two supports are: The Vajra Seat accomplished through blessings, and the mother's womb. Regarding this, some teachers identify the Vajra Seat as that place in India. But here, it is considered the primordially pure, unchanging inner realm, the supreme place where all Buddhas attain enlightenment, the pure gate of Nirvana. The mother's womb is considered the impure gate of samsara, any of the six realms of existence. Therefore, one should know that this is not the literal meaning. In general, the points of the Sutras are bound by four modes: two types of direct meaning and definitive meaning, two types of intention and hidden intention. And the points of the Tantras, on top of that, have two types of literal meaning and non-literal meaning, one should know that they are bound by six modes. These are also from the Madhyamaka: The appearances of the Bardo are: The naturally abiding aggregates, elements, and afflictions appear as objects. The faintness and staggering of death, and the consciousness not abiding in one place. The Dharmata Bardo is also body, wisdom, light, and color. The development of bindus and the appearances of the elements, whatever appears, is the Dharmata mandala. The appearances of existence, like flickering, like the appearances of a hazy dream. True appearance is false, it is the object of mind. White, etc.
