The relics are known by whether they are extremely clear or not, whether they have five lights or not, and by the Bodhi tree and its leaves. Third, regarding the four aspects of light: its essence, cause, classification, and the result of the degree of liberation. The essence of light is the natural manifestation of five colors. The cause is the combination of clear elements and the self-radiance of practiced awareness, arising from the past. The classification, according to circumstances, is into three types: upright, radiating, and circular. Alternatively, it appears as a ladder piercing the sky, or as a halo in the center of the sky. The result is that if it appears as a circle, one is liberated in the first bardo. If it appears upright like a sky ladder, one is liberated without the bardo of reality because of the thorough purity of the primordial state. If it radiates, one is liberated at the time of the final bardo. If the light, like a ladder, pierces the deceased's body, house, or the surroundings of the cremation site, one is liberated in the union of the four wisdoms within seven days of meditation. If it appears as a halo, one is liberated in the vision of clusters within five days. In the Vajrasattva Heart Mirror, it says: There are two types of light: one appears as a halo, and the other appears upright like a ladder. The one that appears as a halo attains stability from the fifth day and realizes complete enlightenment. The one that appears as a ladder realizes complete enlightenment within seven days. Furthermore, in The Blazing of the Corpse, it says: Light has three forms: If it is surrounded by a circle, arising from the remains, this is the fruit of certainty attained in the first bardo. If it is upright, this is enlightenment in an instant, without the appearance of the bardo. If the light appears from the rays, this is the attainment of perfect enlightenment in the final bardo. Thus, when self-arisen forms appear, emanations are scattered. From within that, emanations radiate outward to the ten directions of the world for the benefit of sentient beings. Therefore, in the fields of taming of the six realms of self-appearing images and the six realms of other-appearing characteristics, benefit is accomplished by two types of emanations. In that very text, it says: Thus, in the mandala of light, whoever attains enlightenment, this fortunate great-hearted one, through emanations, naturally benefits sentient beings in the ten directions. This one acts in space.
