Thus I have heard. The secret Ati Yoga establishes self-awareness and overwhelms the lower vehicles. The meaning of the three kayas, self-arisen and absorbed into itself, is the great, unmeditated Dzogchen from the unborn realm. It is separate from both the object and subject of meditation. Self-liberation without grasping is like a knot in a snake. It is the great self-liberation and self-enlightenment. Likewise, all thoughts of characteristics are the great self-liberation and self-enlightenment. In the vehicle of Dzogchen Ati, where is there hope and doubt? If there is hope and doubt, it is the cause of falling. Likewise, it is self-liberation without grasping. Even the appearance of phenomena with characteristics arises from itself and dissolves into itself. Likewise, in Dzogchen Ati, there is no practice, and it is separate from practice and non-practice. It is unmade and unarisen. It is unobstructed, all-pervasive, and complete. It is unchanging and a vast expanse. It is without dharma and a great Buddha. It is without location and without wisdom. Without mind, without thought, without Buddha. Thus it is. Thus, at the pinnacle of all, this spontaneously accomplished vehicle of Dzogchen Ati Yoga has three divisions. As it says in the Great Treatise on Ati: "For those with mind, the Mind Series. For those with space, the Space Series. For those without gradual effort, the Instruction Series." Thus, the Mind Series, the Space Series, and the Instruction Series are the three. Moreover, since there is no dharma other than one's own mind, it is the Mind Series of various kinds. These are merely intended to prevent the wisdom of the self-arisen mind from being transformed into something else. The Space Series speaks of how there is nowhere else to go from the expanse of the Dharma-nature Samantabhadri. These are merely necessary to prevent anything else from arising from the expanse of the Dharma-nature that is spoken of. The Instruction Series is about settling on the essential point of how things are. These are intended to prevent straying elsewhere from the essential point and delaying the meaning, and thus they reach the pinnacle of all. These do not go beyond the three desires of "zhi," which are called the Great Perfection of the basis, path, fruit, and liberation in terms of the meaning of questions and answers. Among these, the Mind Series is called the Great Perfection that speaks of the basis as the ultimate. In terms of divisions, there are two: the Great Perfection that speaks of various minds as mind, and the Great Perfection that speaks of the aspect of mind as mind. What is called mind is the prevention of the existence and non-existence of mere mind, and in terms of meaning, mere mind is not established.
