Thus it is said. The divisions are two, small and large, or the three vehicles of Hearers, Solitary Realizers, and Bodhisattvas, or immeasurable depending on the minds of those to be tamed. As it says in the Lankavatara Sutra: As long as the mind is engaged, there is no end to the vehicle. Thus it is said. The purpose is to accomplish the two benefits of temporary and ultimate meaning. The result is to be liberated from the three realms and attain liberation. Third, explaining the distinctions in detail: From Rigpa Rangshar it says: The divisions of the vehicle are as follows: Sutra and extensive great, and also very extensive great. The very extensive great is eighty-four thousand inconceivable. Extensive, numerous, and great, inconceivable and immeasurable, inexpressible and inconceivable great. The great Victorious One is like this: the divisions are considered to be nine types. Hearers and Solitary Realizers, and likewise Bodhisattvas. Kriya and Upa, and likewise the Yoga vehicle is taught. Maha Anu Yoga, and likewise Dzogchen Ati. Thus, it is taught as nine types, it is the great teaching of the Dharma. To establish the meaning of what was said: In general, although the categories of the Buddha's teachings are limitless, if they are condensed into just the vehicle, then the vehicle can be briefly summarized as the two vehicles of small and large, or the vehicle of the nature of cause and the vehicle of the result, the Vajra Vehicle. If explained in detail, for the three types of beings with inferior faculties, there are the three vehicles of Hearers, Solitary Realizers, and Bodhisattvas; for the three types of beings with intermediate faculties, there are the three of Kriya, Upa, and Yoga; and for the three types of beings with sharp faculties, the three of Maha, Anu, and Ati are taught. In the Great Adornment of Ati it says: The teachings that I have taught, from the order of sentient beings' minds, with the distinction of large and small, are taught in the manner of two orders. Each one's view and retention. Each one itself is two orders, inverted and correct views. By inverted understanding one abides in samsara, the correct one is three orders: for those with small minds and great, and likewise for those with intermediate minds, it is taught in the manner of three orders. The small order has three aspects: the Dharma that is in accordance with that, contaminated by conceptual thought is the Hearer. For those with awareness it is the Solitary Realizer, for those with conceptual clinging it is the Bodhisattva. What is taught to the three types of beings with intermediate faculties is, for the extremely inferior it is the Action Tantra, for the inferior ones it is

Is the practice. One with discernment is indeed yoga. For the three great ones who possess the sequence, it arises in the vast-minded, and is perfected in the essence-minded. It is greatly perfected upon the supreme new. Thus it is said. The exceedingly vast Great Vehicle is such that all teachings are included within the three baskets. Mantras are exceedingly vast. The Sutra Pitaka, the Vinaya Pitaka, and the Abhidhamma Pitaka, and the Great Vehicle are such that all teachings are included within the three baskets. Mantras are exceedingly vast. The Sutra Pitaka, the Vinaya Pitaka, and the Abhidhamma Pitaka. These three, when equal, amount to twenty-one thousand. The aggregates of Dharma are eighty-four thousand. If one were to further divide from that, in relation to each antidote for subduing the conceptual aggregates of sentient beings, they are vast, numerous, inconceivable, and beyond expression. Here, from the arrangement of the nine vehicles, first, in explaining the Hearer Vehicle, there are five aspects. The essence is: the mind that desires to attain liberation alone from samsara, which becomes the means to realize the selflessness of the individual. The definition is: having listened to the Dharma from the teacher, proclaiming it to others, and achieving the final existence of enlightenment by relying on the teacher, is the Hearer. The purpose is: to definitely liberate from samsara. The result is: attaining the Arhat with remainder. The divisions are the Sutra School and the Vaibhashika School. The Vaibhashika School is: the coarse, conventional truth appears as one aggregate, like a yak's tail and tender grass, but in ultimate truth, it is considered to be particulate atoms with parts, scattered. The continuum of consciousness is conventional, the moment is ultimate, without parts, like water in a vase. From the aggregates, elements, and sources, the coarse appearance is surrounded by fine particles, considered to have intervals. Although the selflessness of the individual is acknowledged, the self of phenomena, that is, the existence of particles and moments, is also acknowledged. That is, by understanding the Dharma contained within the Four Truths as cause and effect, acceptance and rejection, and by focusing on the four aspects of cause, origin, cessation, and path, with the aspects of consciousness, suffering is to be known, origin is to be abandoned, path is to be cultivated, and cessation is to be understood in the manner of being attained, and with the aspects of suffering being abandoned, emptiness, and selflessness, the path is reason, practice, and liberation, cessation is peace, excellence, and the manner of meditating on selflessness.
