If one excessively clings to appearances, one becomes bound by great attachment, and thus falls into the realms of the six destinies. In the yoga of continuous conduct, there are three ways to go astray. If one acts like a madman towards all appearances, one will fall into the Asura realm. If one engages in meaningless, rigid words, one will fall into the view of the perishable aggregate. If one acts like a small child towards all the objects of the six senses, one will fall into the state of non-disclosure. In the yoga of continuous meditation, there are three ways to go astray. If one meditates on equanimity and selflessness, one will fall from dullness into darkness. If one meditates on the syllables of concentration, one will fall into the realm of samsara due to attachment. If one meditates on non-conceptual emptiness, one will fall into endless annihilation. Although the causes of going astray are countless, there is no greater way to go astray than this. For the lineage of Lugu, there is no going astray. For the lineage of the path, there appears to be going astray, but in reality, there is not a single way to go astray. The reason for connecting cause and effect is to speak of cutting off the ways of going astray. Thus it is said. That is to say, for yogis who have not seen the manifestation of clear awareness, and for those who, although they have seen it, cling to extremes due to dull faculties, there are ways to go astray in view, meditation, conduct, and result. The way to cut off these ways of going astray is to establish the self-illuminating radiance of awareness as the object of observation at the sense gates, to separate oneself from the extremes of conceptual thought of existence and non-existence, and to make a firm decision within oneself in the view of self-clarity and self-appearance, thereby cutting off the ways of going astray. As it says in the "Refutation of Extremes": "The nature of view is seeing, without being swayed by words of conceptual thought." Even if one meditates on bindus from the state of self-arisen and self-appearing, but does not fall into the grasper and grasped of Tipur, thereby expanding in vast openness, clarifying and not being distracted, recognizing the wisdom of clear depth, and meditating in an immeasurable way, there will be no way to go astray. As it says: "The meditation that does not go astray is when the sense gates are clear, not swayed by the thoughts of the mind, contemplating on awareness itself, the mind not wandering outwards. Not a clear appearance with characteristics, nor falling into isolated emptiness, not continuous bliss, nor falling into dull equanimity, clear recollection and rest, not going into wrong practice, the grasping easily flowing inwards, the grasping with clear form, the transformation of colors and syllables, etc., these

If you don't fall to the lower vehicle, it is the meditation of staying without distraction. Thus it is said. In that state, are you swayed by discursive thoughts? Whatever arises as the dualistic aspect of the sensory field is liberated by using it. Cutting off its straying point is: arising spontaneously and liberating spontaneously, without mixing in acceptance or rejection in between. Do not meditate on the benefits of recognition. At the time of whatever appears, by leaving it on the appearance itself, it is liberated on the level of awareness. Open and clear, without any distinctions, vast and expansive, vibrant and clear, without mixing in any clinging to dualistic dharmas. As it says in "The Lion's Complete Prowess": The unobstructed practice of Dzogchen itself, is not produced by doing, but culminates in three: non-attachment, self-liberation. Thus it is said. The result is the great self-perfected, primordially obtained accomplishment. Without striving from the beginning, recognizing that this very awareness of one's own state is the result, settling the ground with a single decisive cut, thereby cutting off the straying point. As it says in that very text: Dzogchen practice is primordially existent. It is not produced by meditation, but culminates in four: immutable, beyond thought. The meaning of Dzogchen itself is difficult to realize. It cannot be found with indicative words. It culminates in two: instructions, secret essence. Dzogchen awareness is itself without thought. It is not realized through meditation, but culminates in one: a vast expanse. Dzogchen self-arisen wisdom itself, is not accomplished through practice, but culminates in two: the definitive heart essence. Dzogchen result is itself a single decision. It is not perfected through generation, but culminates in three: non-attachment instructions. Thus it is said. Third, the way awareness appears at the gate: Of awareness and appearance, awareness is called appearing at the gate when one looks at one's own radiance or recognizes one's own arising. At that time, the power dissolves into the ground, clear and without gathering or scattering, vast and expansive, vibrant and clear, remaining open and clear. As it says in "The Jeweled Array": From the gate, it arises as the path, dissolving into the state of space-like emptiness. The wisdom of meaning appears universally, yet it is perfected in the state and arises from the state. Thus it is said. Appearance emerges from the gate as light, bodies, bindus, and so on. As it says in that very text: Then, at the time of emerging at the gate, the wisdom body, the self-nature of the sphere, the skillful means body, the self-nature of awareness, manifestly appear without gathering or separating, without disintegration, unobstructed, great heart essence, not abiding as a majestic body, the essence is pure, the very expanse of wisdom.
