The two combine, and the wind-mind does not dissipate outwards, so there are no dreams, and one abides in the state of single luminosity. When one is accustomed to it, one can see and hear the appearances of the surroundings, but one does not cling to them. Clarity and non-attachment become inseparable, and the bliss of one's own state and the three appear simultaneously. As it says in the Transcendent: "Having definitely gathered body, speech, and mind, Mix the great luminosity with sleep." This is the meaning. The noble lamas attach great importance to this. That is, at first there are many dreams, but in the end they cease. The best is to cease from forgetfulness, the intermediate is to cease from great clarity, and the lowest is to cease from dreaming of virtue. "Best and intermediate" refer to the clarity of falling asleep, and focusing the mind is best and intermediate, and the lowest refers to the action. As it says in the Tantra: "These dreams are many at first, The best is forgetfulness, the end is cessation. The intermediate is very clear, Know that it is the end. The lowest is unclear, and then it changes. All of these reach the standard." Thus it is said. Sleep is taught as self-born wisdom, Sleep is also the great expanse of self-born primordiality, All powers dissolve into the essence of reality, Not clinging to appearances, all elaboration naturally subsides, It is the intention of uncreated self-born wisdom. During the day, awareness arises from power as appearance, that is the self-born wisdom manifesting outwards. At night, the clinging to appearances dissolves into power, and power dissolves into the base. Therefore, for a moment abiding in the luminosity of non-attachment, this is the self-born wisdom of sleep, it is the time of liberation from samsara and nirvana. As it says in the Six Spaces: "Sleep should not be abandoned, It is not cut off by the mind. In short, body and speech abide separately, The parts born of mind do not dissipate outwards. On the objects of the six senses, The mind of awareness and discernment does not change. In the great expanse of self-appearance without attachment, The experience of clarity and non-thought arises." Thus it is said. This also purifies ignorance into dharmata, as it says in the Transcendent: "Whoever meditates on sleep yoga, This person can transform ignorance into the path." Thus it is said. The thunderbolt of the defilements liberating in their own place is: Thus, the mind in between liking and disliking, The three poisons arise from power as appearance. Arising from the dharmadhatu, appearing in the nature of the dharmadhatu. Apart from the dharmadhatu, there is no movement at all, embellishment and fabrication

Without making any changes. "Immediately upon recognizing the nature of reality and abiding therein." "Self-pacifying, self-dissolving, self-liberating—this is the essence of the key point. Since samsara and nirvana do not waver from the nature of reality, it is merely the self-image of a groundless emptiness. Afflictions, too, have never had an essence; there is no ground to rely on, no root from which to arise, so naturally, in a single instant, they go to liberation. When the essence of awareness is recognized as utterly transparent, the afflictions clear in their own place and self-liberate, like pulling out the stake of a knot, and the rope naturally loosens. If you do not understand in this way, then even if you abandon, you cannot abandon, like the body and its shadow, you are bound by your own doing. Even if you purify, you cannot purify, like purifying crystal with white, the purifier and the purified are no different. Even if you transform, you cannot transform, like the color of turquoise does not change, the mind cannot change the mind. Letting it self-pacify will not pacify it, because the one who lets it go is none other than conceptual thought. You cannot liberate with an antidote, like stirring up water with a stick when you want it to be clear, the antidote itself is the same as the object to be abandoned and the agent that abandons. Afflictions themselves are not the nature of reality, they are no different from the consciousness of ordinary fools, so they cannot escape samsara. In the *Union of Sun and Moon*, it says: Are these afflictions to be abandoned? Are they to be purified? Are they to be transformed? Are they to be left to self-pacify? Are each of them to be subdued with an antidote? Are they to be placed in their own nature? Are they their own nature? Are they all self-liberated? The Teacher spoke thus. Then Vajradhara declared: Listen, great sage, listen! These words that I have taught abide in the continuum of all sentient beings. They are bound to samsara by these, and if great bliss is obscured, these are not to be abandoned. If you do not realize it as it is, like the body and shadow of a yogi, from that, that itself arises, so abandoning by abandoning is not the truth. Likewise, purifying is also not the truth, and transforming will not transform. Before realizing the unchanging essence, like a crystal rock or a turquoise stone, it is not possible to purify and transform. In the realm of self-nature purity, the one endowed with yoga observes thus. "Likewise, stillness is also not the truth. If you do not know the manifest higher seeing, then like Mount Meru, the king of mountains."
