It is called "mind" because it is all-pervasive and luminous, and because it arises as self-awareness in each individual. Moreover, the mind and mental events of conceptual thought are not the mind of enlightenment, as they arise impurely from the display of playful energy. Because it is the mind of samsara, it is contradictory in substance. There is a difference between energy and the display of playful energy arising from energy. In this regard, the All-Creating King says: "The meaning of purification is as follows: The essence, the mind of enlightenment, is self-born and primordially pure. All that is done by the All-Creating King is completely pure in Samantabhadra. Therefore, it is said to be 'purification.' The meaning of awakening is as follows: The essence, self-born wisdom, pervades and abides in all things—appearance and existence, the container and its contents, all Buddhas of the three times, sentient beings of the three realms and six classes, and suchness itself. Therefore, it is said to be 'awakening.' The meaning of mind is as follows: The essence, self-born wisdom, enters, controls, and clearly cuts through all things—appearance, existence, the container and its contents. Therefore, it is said to be 'mind.'" Thus it is said. The conclusive summary of the reason is: On the self-nature of the display of playful energy arising from energy, enlightenment suddenly becomes Buddhahood, and the multitude of ignorance and delusion arises from non-enlightenment. Whatever display of appearance, existence, the container and its contents arises from the basis of all, the eight consciousnesses and their objects, does not move from the expanse of the mind of enlightenment. In the very nature of the unmoved and equal mind-expanse, samsara and nirvana are united, and the expanse of realization is vast and liberated. The mind of enlightenment, like a flawless and transparent jewel, spontaneously and clearly arises from its own energy. The appearance of enlightenment as a suddenly purified Buddha does not move from the appearance of awareness itself. The container and contents, along with the eight consciousnesses, of sentient beings deluded by ignorance due to non-enlightenment, also do not move from the nature of awareness. Moreover, whatever appears to each individual is said not to move from the nature of their own awareness, but there is no such thing as a single, common nature of awareness for all, or as something that does not move, because it is impossible for knowable objects. The basis of all, the root of mind, is ignorance, which is unstated. From the basis of all, the alaya consciousness is merely non-conceptual clarity, the five sense consciousnesses are non-conceptual self-illumination, and the mental consciousness is conceptual with objects.

Merely holding and single-pointedly abiding in non-thought, and the dwelling of the afflicted mind consciousness in whatever of the three poisons arises. Those also arise as a play from the power of awareness, and in the nature of awareness, there is no impurity; merely as clear appearance, they appear as all defiled samsaric dharmas. Thus, the ground awareness from which all arises and appears is like a jewel, a treasury, a mirror, a crystal ball, silk, a great garuda, a lion, an ocean, space, and the earth, having the same nature. As it is said in the Garland of Pearls: "Such is the nature of mind, Fulfilling desires like a jewel, Complete with needs like a treasury, Appearing as shown like a mirror, Immaculate and clear like a crystal, Appearing various like silk, Without expansion or contraction like a great garuda, The power of view complete like a lion, Deep and pervasive like an ocean, Self-born liberation like space, All stable like the earth, Superior to all objects." And so on. That is also only representing one aspect from the examples, and there is nothing that is completely the same. Those with little wisdom think that everything is the same by the self-character of sound, or they exemplify with negative examples. For example, for a jewel, having established that it has the aspect of spontaneously perfect qualities, they hold onto the example of an inanimate object, etc. Here, for those who do not understand these aspects, such bad doubts should not be thought of. Therefore, a jewel represents that the nature of awareness has spontaneously perfect qualities, but it is not to be thought of as an inanimate object. A treasury represents that needs are naturally complete, but it is not to be thought of as a place and the self-character of things, etc. A mirror represents that the basis of appearance is unobstructed, but it is not to be thought of as the function of images that have already appeared, etc. Crystal represents original purity and transparency, but it is not to be thought of as purity only in one aspect and having identifiability, etc. Silk represents that the manner of appearance is unobstructed, but it is not to be thought of as being formed into colors and shapes. Garuda represents that abiding in its own state is without expansion or contraction, but it is not to be thought of as awareness existing in the emptiness of emptiness. Lion represents being without fear and hope, but it is not to be thought of as overpowering something. Ocean represents clarity
