Just as being covered by husks, the rice fruit does not appear, similarly being covered by afflictions, that is not called a Buddha. Just as being liberated from husks, the fruit itself naturally appears, similarly being liberated from afflictions, the Dharmakaya itself becomes extremely clear. Water trees have no heartwood, which is used as a metaphor in the world, but its fruit is the heartwood itself, which is initially eaten. From the cycle of having no heartwood, being free from the cage of afflictions, its fruit is the Buddha, becoming the nectar of all sentient beings. Thus, butter and so on, butter lamps and so on, jewels and so on, gold and so on, grains and so on, the six metaphors of tree fruits, representing the three states of base, path, and fruit, are spoken of. Maitreya, among the nine types of metaphors, the first metaphor of the Buddha concealed in the lotus bud is, as stated in the Ratnagotravibhāga: Just as in a lotus of unpleasant color, there dwells the Tathagata blazing with a thousand marks, seen by the immaculate divine eye, like taking it out from the bud of a water-born lotus. Similarly, the Sugata in places like the Avīci hell, sees his own nature with the Buddha's eye, and with compassion abiding at the unobstructed and limitless end, liberates us from obstacles. Thus, and so on. The second metaphor is like the honey of bees: Just as the honey gathered by a swarm of creatures, is sought by wise people for their benefit, and upon seeing it, they skillfully separate the swarm of creatures completely. The great sage, with his all-knowing eye, sees that the lineage is like honey, and its obscurations are like bees, which he completely and permanently eliminates. Thus, and so on. The third metaphor is like a fruit inside a husk: Just as the heart of a fruit enclosed in a husk cannot be enjoyed by people, those who seek it for food and other benefits, extract it from the husk. Similarly, the Victorious One mixed with the defilements of sentient beings, as long as he is not liberated from the defilements of afflictions, the Victorious One does not gather in the three realms. Thus, and so on. The fourth metaphor is like gold in mud: Just as the gold of humans, which flows very easily,

Fallen into the mire, the fearless Dharma nature is right there, abiding as it is. Even if residing for hundreds of years, the gods with divine eyes, seeing it there, say to people, "Here is gold, the supreme jewel, purify it and accomplish it with jewels!" Just like that, the Able One sees the qualities of sentient beings submerged in the mire of afflictions, like impurity. In order to purify those afflictive mires, he pours down the rain of the supreme Dharma upon beings. Thus it is said. The fifth example is like a treasure beneath the ground: Just as in a poor person's home, there is an inexhaustible treasure beneath the ground, but that person does not know it, and the treasure does not say to him, "I am here." Just like that, the jewel hidden within the mind, the stainless nature and the inalienable Dharma nature, because they are not realized, the suffering of poverty is constantly experienced by beings. Thus it is said. The sixth example is like a sprout of a tree in the hollow of bark: Just as in fruit trees such as Asma, the seed and sprout that exist are the indestructible Dharma. With the presence of plowing, watering, etc., the essence of the king of trees is gradually accomplished. Just like that, the Dharma realm's virtuous nature, hidden within the skin and hollow of the fruits of sentient beings' ignorance, etc., likewise, relying on those virtuous conditions, gradually transforms into the essence of the Victorious One, the Able One. Thus it is said. The seventh example is like a jewel image within rotten clothes: Just as an image of the Victorious One made of jewels is covered by rotten, foul-smelling clothes, and a god sees it on the road and speaks of this matter to the passerby in order to liberate it. Just like that, the essence of the Sugata, covered by various afflictions since beginningless time, is seen even in animals, and likewise, in order to liberate them, he shows various means. Thus it is said. The eighth example is like a lord of men residing in the womb of a wicked woman: Just as some ugly, helpless women reside in a helpless dwelling, yet they carry a fetus with the splendor of a king, and they do not know that the lord of men is in their own womb. The birth in existence (srid par skye ba, Sanskrit: bhava-jāti), is like a helpless home, and impure sentient beings are like pregnant women. Who is there to protect them? The stainless realm abides in her womb.
