The Shravaka and Pratyekabuddha Arhats, who have washed away defilements, have excellent qualities, and the Bodhisattvas who have attained the grounds, who have become superior to those who have not abandoned all the grounds of ignorance, appear as noble ones, and even more superior to them, the Buddhas who are free from all obscurations appear as noble ones. According to this principle, the Shravaka and Pratyekabuddha Arhats are not considered to be of the nature of Nirvana, but only to have temporarily rested from the suffering of Samsara. As it is said in the same text: "Why is that, that is the Dharmakaya Tathagata, that is the truth of the noble ones, the ultimate Nirvana. Therefore, like the sun and its rays, there is no difference in qualities, there is no Nirvana except for the Buddha himself." Thus it is said. Therefore, without attaining Buddhahood, Nirvana cannot be attained, just as one cannot see the sun after abandoning light and rays. Thus it is said. Third, there are three distinctions from the perspective of example and meaning: complete distinction of example and meaning, combining their similar qualities, and revealing the nature of the essence. The first is explained in the treatises that correctly ascertain the meaning spoken in the final teachings, in the Praise of the Dharmadhatu: Just as when milk is mixed, the essence of butter is not visible, similarly when afflictions are mixed, the Dharmadhatu is also not seen. Just as when milk is purified, the essence of butter becomes stainless, similarly when afflictions are purified, the Dharmadhatu becomes extremely stainless. Just as a lamp inside a vase cannot appear even slightly, similarly the Dharmadhatu is not seen inside a vase of afflictions. From whatever direction holes are made in the vase, from that very direction the nature of light will appear. When that vase is broken by the Vajra of Samadhi, then it will appear to the ultimate end of space. Just as a precious lapis lazuli is always bright, but when it resides inside a stone, its light is not clear. Similarly, the Dharmadhatu, which is obscured by afflictions, is extremely stainless, but its light is not clear in Samsara, it becomes clear in Nirvana. If there is element, then by action, fields of rice will be seen. If there is no element, then even if action is done, only some afflictions will arise.
